LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team continued their quest for their second win of the season in day two of the Triton Invitational. Sonoma State fought hard against the Red Foxes of Marist College for their first game, but came up short, losing 9-7. Game two proved to be a different story as the Seawolves would get redemption against the Broncos of Santa Clara University, winning 8-6.
Game 1: Marist College 9, Sonoma State 7
Sonoma State came out quick and jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first 2:17 from the hand of
Bridgette Souza. Marist would get on the board in the second quarter on a shot from Hannah Levien. The Seawolves would score three goals in the second quarter including one from Souza to complete the hat trick. SSU led 5-4 at halftime.
The Red Foxes came out hot and took the lead in the third quarter netting four goals including two from Desiree Desaulniers.
Laura Kunz had the only goal for the Seawolves in the third quarter and left the score at 8-6. Sonoma State fired the first goal in the back of the cage in the fourth quarter on a shot from
Colette Reid to put the Seawolves within one with 6:05 left to play. A goal by Levien and good defense would halt the hopes of a fourth quarter come back as the Red Foxes took the W, 9-7.
Souza led the Seawolves in scoring with three goals. Kunz and Reid pitched in with two apiece. Desaulniers, Levien, and Alison Hamby each had two goals for the Red Foxes. Jessica Hamby, Jaclyn Puccino, and Kelly Kline contributed one goal to the win.
Ariel Lockshaw got the start and saved seven balls from entering the cage. She passed for an assist as well.
Game 2: Sonoma State 8, Santa Clara 6
Coming into the last game of the tournament, the Seawolves looked to salvage a win before returning home. They faced a familiar opponent in Santa Clara, a team that had beaten them earlier in the season.
Sonoma State would draw first blood on a shot from Souza, in what would be a back and forth battle between the two teams. The Broncos would score the next two goals to end the first quarter with a 2-1 lead. The Seawolves would not go away, scoring two goals in the second quarter on shots by
Adrienne Bisharat and
Alexa May. That would give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead going into halftime.
SSU would open the second half with a quick goal from
Natalie Del Carlo. Her goal would be matched by Santa Clara's Claire Eadington to put the score at 4-3, Seawolves. Sonoma State would score the next two goals, but Santa Clara would quickly follow with two of their own to end the third. Sonoma State led 6-5 to open the fourth quarter, but the Boncos would tie it at six just 31 seconds into the quarter on a shot from Kendall Preston. However, the Seawolves would not allow Santa Clara to rally for a fourth quarter comeback. Souza and
Lindsay Rangel would score the only goals for the Seawolves in the fourth quarter, but it was more than enough as Sonoma State got the win, 8-6
Souza and Rangel led the way for the Seawolves with two goals each, giving them six and three for the tournament, respectively. Bisharat, Del Carlo, May, and
Nicole Browning all threw one into the back of the cage. Eadington completed a hat trick for the Broncos, netting all three of her goals in the third quarter. Marina Allen, Laura Espinosa, and Laura Burtness each had one goal.
Another start in the cage for Lockshaw saw seven more saves, including a steal.
After this weekend the Seawolves stand at 2-8 overall, and 0-2 in the WWPA. They will return home next weekend to take on Cal Lutheran at 9:30 a.m. and fellow WWPA-member Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. UC Davis will come to town next Sunday for a single game starting at 12:00 p.m.
