BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif. -- A new day, a new threat. When something isn't clicking, something (or someone else) is. The Sonoma State men's basketball team called upon
Patrick Scott on Thursday night and he delivered with a game-high 18 points, but it was also the Seawolf defense that reigned supreme, holding host Cal Poly Pomona to just 53 points, en route to a 60-53 win at Kellogg Gym in Pomona.
SSU (14-9, 12-7 CCAA) is now just one-half game out of fourth place in the conference standings behind Cal State San Bernardino with three games to play. CPP falls out of the three-way tie for first place in the CCAA, dropping to 16-6 overall and 13-6 in conference play.
Cal Poly Pomona led for the majority of the first half, jumping out to a seven-point, 17-10 advantage (its largest of the night) at the 9:39 mark. The seven-point lead would then quickly turn into a two-point deficit as Sonoma State went on a 9-0 run over the next 3:18 to take the 19-17 lead on a three-ball by
Ashley Arnott. The Broncos would knot the game back up at 19, but the Seawolves would close out the half by scoring nine of the final 13 points to take a 28-24 lead into the intermission.
It was truly a team effort in the opening period, as Scott and
Will Olsem led the way with just six points apiece. The Seawolves shot 11 of 25 from the hardwood (44.0 percent), but was just 3 for 11 from long range. On the other side of the ball, SSU held the hosts to just 9 of 25 shooting (36.0 percent).
The Broncos would keep things close at the start of the second half, but the Seawolves went on an 11-0 run, spearheaded by three three-pointers by Olsem in a five-minute span to take a 41-30 lead with 11:08 left in the contest. The Sonoma State lead would eventually get to as much as 15 points with 5:30 remaining, but Cal Poly Pomona began chipping away, even coming to within only four points on three different occasions. However, clutch free throw shooting by
Steven Pratt, who scored five of his seven points from the charity stripe in the final 32 seconds, sealed the win and the season sweep of the Broncos.
Scott scored 18 points on 7 of 17 from the floor, followed by the 15 points of Olsem, who drained all 15 from beyond the three-point arc. In addition to scoring seven points, Pratt came down with a team-high eight rebounds, handing out four assists.
Justin Herold was held to just six points before fouling out with just 12 minutes of playing time.
Sterling Arterberry helped out with seven rebounds, six assists and five points. For the game, Sonoma State finished at 44.4 percent from the hardwood (20-45).
Cal Poly Pomona had three players score in double-figures, led by the 12 points by both Mitchel Anderson and Dwayne Fells. The Broncos went just 19 of 50 from the floor (38.0 percent), and was just 3 of 20 from long range.
Sonoma State, which clinched a spot in the CCAA tournament with its win against Cal State Dominguez Hills last weekend, will fly back up to the Bay Area and face San Francisco State on Saturday night. Tip off between the Seawolves and Gators is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Main Gymnasium in San Francisco.
