BOX SCORE SAN FRANCISCO -- Behind the game-high 18 points from
Justin Herold and 14 from
Patrick Scott, the Sonoma State men's basketball team has moved into a tie for third place in the CCAA standings with Saturday's convincing 77-61 win over San Francisco State at The Swamp in San Francisco. San Francisco State falls to 8-18 and 6-14 in the CCAA.
Sonoma State moved into third place, due in large part by the Cal State Monterey Bay upset of Cal State San Bernardino, 72-66, in overtime on Saturday in Seaside. The Coyotes are now alone in fifth place at 12-8, one game behind SSU and HSU. Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills are tied in sixth place at 11-9, while Cal State Stanislaus (10-10)has a two-game lead over Cal State East Bay (8-12) for the eighth and final spot in the CCAA tournament.
The Seawolves led from start to finish on Saturday, jumping out to a 21-10 lead just seven minutes into the contest. The Gators would make a run and cut the SSU lead down to just five points at 29-24 with 6:28 left in the first half, but it would be all Seawolves after that, as Sonoma State went on a 15-3 run to close out the period and lead 44-27 at halftime.
It would be much of the same in the second half of play. San Francisco State got to within 10 points at 44-34 with 18:38 left in the game, but that would be as close as the Gators would get the rest of the way.
A successful three-point play by
Steven Pratt at the 11:59 mark extended the lead to 20 (59-39), the Seawolves' largest lead of the night. From then on, the two squads would trade baskets until neither team could score in the final 2:26 of the contest, ending the game at 77-61, in favor of Sonoma State.
The Seawolves shot 50 percent from the floor (25-50), despite being held to just 3 for 14 from three-point range. 24 of SSU's 77 points came from the free throw line; the Gators spent most of the night in foul trouble. In addition to the 18 points from Herold and 14 from Scott, Pratt,
Sterling Arterberry and
Jason Walter netted nine points apiece and
Will Olsem was held to just seven points with just one made three-pointer. Arterberry dished out a game-high eight assists.
