Souza Scores Ten Goals, Sonoma Wins Two At Home On Saturday

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team was back home this weekend for matches against Cal Lutheran and Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Seawolves hopped into the pool with the Regals of Cal Lutheran for their first game and led the whole way, winning 13-9.  After a long lay over, Sonoma State faced off against WWPA-foe Cal State Monterey Bay and won a hard fought battle, 10-9.

Game 1: Sonoma State 13, Cal Lutheran 9

It would take almost five minutes for the either team to get on the board until back-to-back goals by Sonoma's Bridgette Souza in a span of 33 seconds.  Cal Lutheran followed up with a goal of its own on a corner shot from Kelsey Bergemann at the 2:04 mark.  Souza started off the second quarter with her third goal of the game, completing the hat trick.  The Regals would answer back to keep it close on a shot from Sarah Mock.  The Seawolves' Lindsay Rangel would go off to put the next two goals in the back of the cage in a 22-second span, followed by Souza's fourth goal of the match.  Cal Lutheran would score one more goal in the second quarter to make the score 6-3, Sonoma State at the half.

The second half started with both teams trading goals.  Souza put her fifth goal in the back of the cage and was quickly followed by Bergemann's second for the Regals.  It was another five minutes until Sonoma's Nicole Browning rallied to score two in a row, as well as a goal from Natalie Del Carlo.  Cal Lutheran scored two goals in the final minute of the third quarter.  The fourth quarter started with a Seawolf goal from Laura Kunz and was quickly followed by a Regal goal by Bergemann, completing her hat trick.  But, the Seawolf offense would be too much for Cal Lutheran as Sonoma State took the win, 13-9.

Souza led the Seawolves with five goals in the match.  Rangel and Browning each put two in the back of the cage.  Alexa May, Adrienne Bisharat, Del Carlo, and Kunz all contributed one goal to the Seawolf win.  Leading the way for the Regals was Bergemann with four goals.  Morgan McCardell also had a hat trick for Cal Lutheran.  Mieke Howell and Mock each had one.

Ariel Lockshaw saw the start in the cage for the Seawolves and had 12 saves, along with two steals.

Game 2: Sonoma State 10, CSU Monterey Bay 9

Both offenses got off to a slow start until the Seawolves rallied for two goals, Lindsay Rangel had the first one that ricocheted off of an opposing player to scoot past the goalie.  That was followed just 34 seconds later on an up-close goal by Alexa May to get off to a quick 2-0 lead.  The Otters would fight back, firing in back-to-back goals in a 37-second span to bring the game to a tie.  May got her second goal of the game on a shot that skipped off the water to end the first quarter.

Bridgette Souza netted her sixth and seventh goals in two matches to put the Seawolves up 5-2 early in the second quarter.  However, Cal State Monterey Bay would counter with two goals in a 31-second span, including a penalty shot by Katie Sowul, to narrow the deficit to one.  May would finish off the first half with her third goal of the game, completing the hat trick.

The Otters come out determined, firing off two goals, including a bullet off the hand of Sowul from 20 feet out.  The Seawolves would counter quickly on two goals by Souza.  Sonoma State threatened to take a three-point lead, but an aerobatic save by CSUMB's Amanda Jennings kept the lead at two.

Two goals to start the fourth by Cal State Monterey Bay tied the game at eight.  Scoring her fifth goal of the match, tenth of the day, Souza broke the tie and gave the Seawolves a one-point lead.  An insurance goal by Rangel and a last second save by goalie Ariel Lockshaw locked up the win for the Seawolves, 10-9.

Souza led the way for the Seawolves once again putting five balls into the back of the cage; she had ten in two matches.  May was close behind with a hat trick of her own and Rangel contributed two goals to the win.  Sowul, who had three goals for the game, led the Otters.  Nikki Smart threw in two balls.  Alex Tyrrell, Julie Cooper, Jackie Walters, and Hayley Burke each had one.

Lockshaw was again a dominant force in the cage, saving 16 shots from going in accompanied by two steals.

Sonoma State will be back in action Sunday afternoon against the Aggies of UC Davis, starting at 12 p.m.
