Souza, Lockshaw Keep Seawolves Close In Loss To UC Davis

Ariel Lockshaw stopped 14 shots by UC Davis in Sunday's home loss to the Division I Aggies.
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team faced off against the Aggies of UC Davis in a single non-conference game and came up short in an 8-6 loss.

Good defense was the story in the first quarter as there would only be five total goals scored.  The Aggies' Dakotah Mohr put the first goal on the board at the 6:45 mark.  Sonoma State's Bridgette Souza would not be silenced after her 10-goal performance on Saturday, scoring two goals in a 33-second span.  Down one going into the second quarter, Souza would score quickly, acquiring a hat trick and tying the game at 2-2.  UC Davis countered with two goals by Ariel Feeney and Katie Schlueter to take a two-point lead with 2:09 remaining in the half.  UCD would score one more in the last minute to take the lead into the half, 6-3.

UC Davis looked to extend their lead to start the third quarter and would on a score from the hand of Feeney.  The Seawolves would stay within striking distance on a goal by Souza, her fourth of the game.  UCD's Carmen Eggert would net a lob ball over the reach of Ariel Lockshaw's reach to give the Aggies a four-point lead.

The Seawolves would look to rally for a fourth-quarter comeback and started with a backhand goal by Souza to narrow the deficit to three.  Two minutes later, Caitlin Risden would throw one in to put the score at 8-6.  The Aggie defense would be too much for the Seawolves in the final four minutes and held on to get the win, 8-6.

Souza led all scorers with five goals, adding up to 15 for the weekend.  Risden pitched in with one goal in the fourth quarter.  Carey Faber, Feeney, and Mohr each scored two goals for the Aggies in the win.  Schlueter and Eggert contributed one goal each.

Lockshaw had another strong performance in the cage for the Seawolves, compiling 14 saves and a steal.

Sonoma State ends the weekend with an overall record of 4-9, 2-2 in the WWPA.  They will battle against CSU Bakersfield in a WWPA game next Saturday (Feb. 25) in Rohnert Park, starting at 10:00 a.m.
