HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team traveled to Hayward this weekend to take on fellow Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) member, Cal State East Bay. The Seawolves went into the game searching for their first conference win, but came up empty, losing 11-7.
The Pioneers of Cal State East Bay got off to a fast start, scoring five goals in the first quarter, three of which came from Erica Crain, who threw back-to-back goals in a span of 27 seconds. Sonoma State would not put one in until the 5:06 mark of the second quarter on a shot from
Lindsay Rangel. That would be the only Seawolf goal in the first half, leaving the score at 7-1 going into halftime.
The Seawolves would come out of the locker room determined, netting three balls in the third quarter, all by different players. Cal State East Bay would score one in the third to put the score at 8-4, going into the final quarter. The fourth quarter would see back and forth goals between the two teams, both tallying three goals to make the final score, 11-7, in favor of CSUEB.
Sonoma State moved the ball well allowing four different players to score.
Adrienne Bisharat added three goals to her season total, putting her at eight for the season. Rangel followed close behind contributing two goals.
Nicole Browning and
Lexii Morabito also threw in a goal each. Crain led the Pioneers to victory putting five balls in the back of the cage, three of which came in the first quarter. Carly Clark, Kate McAfee, Meaghan Paschall, Sophie Armstrong, Sara Hudyn and Claire Pierce each sent one goal into the cage for Cal State East Bay.
Ariel Lockshaw got the call to guard the cage for the Seawolves, accumulating 15 saves along with two steals and an assist. The Pioneers started Jayme Pekarske at goalie; she tallied only five saves.
Sonoma State drops to 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the WWPA. The Seawolves will travel down south to La Jolla next weekend (Feb. 11-12) to partake in the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. SSU will first take on San Diego State at 10:40 a.m. to open the tournament next Saturday.
