Bisharat Powers Seawolves To Day One Sweep At LMU Invite

Adrienne Bisharat scored seven goals on Friday, including six against Pomona-Pitzer.
LOS ANGELES -- After opening the Loyola Marymount University Women's Water Polo Invitational with a convincing 13-5 victory over WWPA-foe Cal State San Bernardino earlier in the day, Sonoma State continued its winning ways on Friday, defeating Pomona-Pitzer, 11-8, behind the six goals of Adrienne Bisharat.  With the day one sweep at the LMU Invite at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, the Seawolves improve to 7-12 this season (and 3-4 against WWPA opponents).

Sonoma State 13, Cal State San Bernardino 5  --  Box Score

Cal State San Bernardino drew first blood in the match on a goal by Misty Vu, 5:33 into the contest.  The lead wouldn't last long, however, as Sonoma State's Bridgette Souza found the back of the cage just 12 seconds later, then Brittny Hummel and Alexa May put points on the board, putting the Seawolves up 3-1.  The Coyotes would get a goal back with a 1:14 remaining in the first quarter to cut the SSU lead to 3-2 before both teams again traded scores, moving the score to 4-3 in favor of the Seawolves.

From the 4:15 mark of the second period, it was all Sonoma State, as the Seawolves scored eight unanswered goals, including five in the third quarter to take a sizeable 12-3 lead.  It wasn't until the 6:27 mark of the fourth quarter that Cal State San Bernardino found the cage, but it would be too little, too late as Sonoma State cruised to the 13-5 win.

Souza and Lexii Morabito scored three goals apiece to lead SSU, while Lindsay Rangel added two.  Ariel Lockshaw made 10 saves before Courtney Risden took over in the cage at the 7:10 mark of the fourth period; Risden stopped four shots.

Sonoma State 11, Pomona-Pitzer 8  --  Box Score

After both teams traded goals in the opening four minutes of the match, Sonoma State got a pair of goals from Bisharat and another by Hummel to give the Seawolves a 4-1 lead through one quarter.  After a Pomona-Pitzer goal to start the second, Bisharat again came through to keep the Sagehens trailing by three.  But then, Pomona-Pitzer reeled off three unanswered goals to knot the match at 5-5 with 2:07 to play in the first half.  Another Bisharat goal put the Seawolves in the lead at halftime, 6-5, but the Sagehens would force another tie, this time at 7-7, after three periods.

Bisharat caged her fifth goal of the match at the 7:19 mark of the fourth quarter, but Pomona-Pitzer scored the equalizer a minute and a half later.  With 4:51 left to play, Sonoma State got the go-ahead goal by May, then a pair of insurance goals (one from Natalie Del Carlo and the sixth of the contest from Bisharat) and stifling defense would keep the Sagehens off the scoreboard the rest of the way, completing Friday's sweep of day one action at LMU with the 11-8 win.

Bisharat scored a season-high six goals on eight attempts and five other Seawolves threw one into the cage as well.  Lockshaw made 12 saves and recorded three steals between the posts.

Sonoma State will wrap up the LMU Invitational with a pair of games on Saturday.  The Seawolves will first take on host and sixth-ranked Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m. before facing 20th-ranked CSU Bakersfield at 1:00 p.m.
