Seawolves Fall To Ranked Teams, Split Weekend At LMU Invite

LOS ANGELES -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team endured a monsoon during day two of the LMU Invitational where they would take on two ranked Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opponents.  Game one matched the Seawolves against the host team, the No. 6 Loyola Marymount Lions, who took the win 14-4.  Game two put Sonoma State in the pool against 20th-ranked CSU Bakersfield.  Sonoma State put up a fight but ended up with the loss, 10-7.  With a 2-2 record on the weekend, the Seawolves move to 7-14 overall, 3-6 in the WWPA.

Game 1: #6 Loyola Marymount 14, Sonoma State 4

Sonoma State was a big hole early as LMU scored six goals in the first quarter, including two from Alexandra Honny, to put the Seawolves down 6-0.  The Lions would net three more goals to start the second quarter before SSU would score their first goal on a shot from Colette Reid at the 1:04 mark.  LMU scored once more to end the half and put the score at 10-1.

Looking at a nine point deficit to start the third quarter, the Seawolves would need a lot of help to stage a comeback. With a goal in the third quarter and two in the fourth by Caitlin Risden, Sonoma State would not have enough to close the gap and was defeated 14-4.

Risden led the Seawolves with two goals, followed by Reid and Bridgette Souza with one goal each.  Loyola Marymount was led by Honny who threw in four goals for the Lions.  Morgan Bonk, Casey Flacks, Whitney Delgado, Kassandra Smith, Jessica Morelos, and Kiara Cerda all contributed one goal.  Erin Manke and Kimberly Benedetti had two goals for LMU.

Ariel Lockshaw got the start in the cage for the Sonoma State and had seven saves, along with a steal.

Game 2: #20 CSU Bakersfield 10, Sonoma State 7

A back and forth game throughout, the Seawolves held tough against No. 20 CSU Bakersfield.  The Roadrunners put the first ball in the back of the cage, but Sonoma State was not far behind with two of their own from Lindsay Rangel and Alexa May in a 1:05 span.  SSU continued the trend and scored their third goal in a row to start the second quarter to go up two.  CSUB's Paige Tsuruda took matters into her own hands netting two goals in a row to tie it at 3-3.  Bridgette Souza put her mark on the game with a goal with 56 seconds left in the half to give the Seawolves the 4-3 lead at halftime.

Down by one to start the second half, the Roadrunners would score quickly to tie it at 4-4 and would run away with it from there scoring four goals in the third quarter, compared to Sonoma State's two.  Starting the fourth quarter down by two, the Seawolves scored quickly to cut the deficit in half.  That would be as close as SSU would get to a fourth quarter comeback as CSU Bakersfield rallied off two goals to close out the game and get the win, 10-7.

Souza and Rangel led the way for the Seawolves scoring two goals a piece.  Adrienne Bisharat, Malina Lorring, and May contributed one goal each.  Seven different Roadrunners scored in the win, six of which had one goal each.  Tsuruda led Bakersfield with four goals.

With 13 saves, Ariel Lockshaw contributed another solid performace in the cage.  Alex Bayer got the start for CSUB, and had six saves.

Sonoma State will be back in their home pool on Thursday (Mar. 22) to take on Maryland in a single non-conference match, starting at 3:00 p.m.
