Seawolves Fight Hard In Loss Against #20 UC San Diego

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.-  The Sonoma State women's water polo team jumped in the pool with the Tritons of UC San Diego for a single game match, falling 14-9.

The Tirtons came out firing scoring five goals in the first quarter, all from different players.  Bridgette Souza scored the first goal for the Seawolves at the 5:08 mark, but that would be the only ball Sonoma State would get into the cage in the first quarter.  Both teams shared back-and-forth goals in the second quarter, scoring two each.  For the Seawolves, Souza scored her second goal of the game along with Alexa May pitching in one, leaving the score at 7-3 at halftime.

Desperate to cut into the four-point defeicit, Sonoma scored the first goal of the second half on a shot from Nicole Browning.  However, the Tritons would counter with one of their own from the hand of Allison Pelgado.  The Seawolves would not gain any ground in the third quarter, being outscored 4-3, bringing the score to 11-6 at the end of the third quarter.  Trailing by five with eight minutes remaining, things didn't get any easier for Sonoma as UCSD nailed two goals to start the quarter, putting their lead at seven with 6:27 remaining.  Sonoma State would try to make a run at it, scoring three goals in the final 5:14, but the hole was to deep as the Tritons came away with the win 14-9.

Adrienne Bisharat and Souza led the Seawolves with two goals apiece.  Natalie Del Carlo, Lindsay Rangel, May, and Browning all fired one in the back of the cage.  Malina Lorring scored her first goal of the season for the Seawolves as well.  Kristen Bates led the Tritons with a hat trick.  Katherine Biehle, Jessica Tran, Sarah Lizotte, and Natalie Peng each had two goals for the Tritons.  Pelgado contributed one.

Ariel Lockshaw got the start in the cage for Sonoma State and had another stong performance.  Despite allowing 14 goals, Lockshaw had 14 blocks along with five assists.

Sonoma State drops to 4-11 overall, 2-4 in conference play and will be on the road next weekend visiting Fresno Pacific on Friday (Feb. 9) and UC Davis on Saturday (Feb. 10).
