Sonoma State Falls To 13th-Ranked Maryland At Home, 17-8

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Malina Lorring scored a pair of second-half goals, but it wouldn't be enough as the Sonoma State women's water polo team suffered a 17-8 defeat by the 13th-ranked Terrapins of the University of Maryland in Thursday's non-conference women's water polo match at Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.  With the loss, the Seawolves drop to 7-15 this season, while the Terrapins improve to 12-4.

The game started out with three straight goals by Maryland in 64-second span, two of which came from the hand of Allison Campbell.  Down 4-1, the Seawolves would get on the board on a goal by Laura Kunz at the 6:42 mark of the second quarter.  Kunz's goal was the only one for SSU in the first half while the Terrapins went on to score seven first-half goals.

The second half started out with a quick Maryland goal by Danielle Robinson and was promptly followed by a Seawolves goal from Malina Lorring less than a minute later.  Sonoma State would score two more in the third quarter, including one from Lindsay Rangel with just 14 seconds remaining in the quarter.  Trailing by eight, SSU would have to score a lot, quickly.  However, the Maryland offense would be too much for the Seawolves to handle as the Terrapins scored five fourth-quarter goals, compared to Sonoma State's four to close out the match and take the win, 17-8.

Lorring led the goal scoring for the Seawolves with two, both coming in the second half.  Natalie Del Carlo, Caitlin Risden, Lexii Morabito, Anna O'Connell, Kunz, and Rangel all contributed one goal for the Seawolves' offense.  Robinson and Campbell each had four goals toward the Terrapins' win.  Rebecca Gerrity and Nicole Tobin each had hat tricks for Maryland.  Zoe Respondek had two goals, while Carly Hoshko threw in one.

Ariel Lockshaw started in the cage for the Seawolves and had seven saves along with two steals.  Courtney Risden also saw some playing time, coming in at the five-minute mark of the fourth quarter.  She had one save.

Sonoma State will be back in the pool on Friday (Mar. 23) when they travel to Cal State Monterey Bay for a WWPA match, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
