Seawolves Offense Sputters In Loss To Santa Clara, 9-2

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--  Scoring their only two goals of the match in the fourth quarter, Sonoma State would not have enough offense to take down fellow WWPA member, Santa Clara, and would take the loss 9-2.  The loss drops SSU to 7-17 for the season and 3-8 in the WWPA.  Santa Clara improves to 5-19 and 4-5 in conference play.

The first quarter started slow with no goals until Santa Clara's Laura Espinosa put one in at the 4:42 second mark.  Espinosa followed that with her second goal of the first quarter just 1:32 seconds later.  The Broncos would score two more times in the first quarter to take a 4-0 lead.  There were no goals were scored in the second quarter as each teams defense would prove tough.

Trailing 4-0 going into the second half, the Seawolves looked to make a comeback.  However, the Broncos had other plans as Sarah Safir scored the fifth and sixth goals for SCU to take a commanding 6-0 lead with 4:14 left in the third quarter.  Jamie Swartz contributed to the goal scoring for the Broncos on a shot that skimmed off the water into the back of the cage to put Santa Clara University up 7-0 going into the final eight minutes of play.

Sonoma State got on the board, after coming up empty in the first three quarters, on a shot from Natalie Del Carlo to make the score 7-1.  SCU answered back with a goal from Espinosa giving her a hat trick and a seven-point Bronco lead with 4:57 remaining in the match.  The Seawolves scored their second goal of the game on a penalty shot that was fired into the back of the cage by Adrienne Bisharat.  Santa Clara would not allow a comeback, scoring just 27 seconds after the Bisharat penalty shot to make the final score 9-2.

Del Carlo and Bisharat scored a goal each for the Seawolves, both coming in the fourth quarter.  Espinosa led the attack for the Broncos, netting a hat trick.  Safir threw in two balls, both coming in the third quarter.  Kendall Preston, Laura Brutness, Ashleigh Bandimere and Swartz all had one goal in the winning effort.

Ariel Lockshaw was credited with 11 saves for the Seawolves, also contributing two steals.

Sonoma State will play their last home game next Friday (Apr. 6), against WWPA foe Cal State East Bay at 3:00 pm.
