SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Sonoma State women's water polo team traveled to Santa Clara to take part in The Bronco, Santa Clara Invitational. The Seawolves were in the pool twice on Saturday, taking on San Jose State and Colorado State. Behind Adrienne Bisharat's four goals and Brittny Hummel's hat trick, Sonoma State split day one of the invitational, beating Colorado State 8-6, and losing to San Jose State, 16-6. The Seawolves move to 8-19 on the season and 4-9 in the WWPA.
Game 1: San Jose State 16, Sonoma State 6
Sonoma State was outmatched and outscored in its first game of the Santa Clara Invitational, losing to San Jose State, 16-6.
The Seawolves scored first at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter on a shot by Caitlin Risden to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would not be held quiet, rolling off five goals in a row to go ahead, 5-1. SSU scored once more to end the first quarter on a goal by Lexi Morabito, to put the score at 5-2. Sonoma State continued the scoring in the second quarter with two more goals to narrow the deficit to one. With 43 seconds left in the second quarter, SJSU put one in the back of the cage to take a 6-4 lead at halftime.
From then on the Seawolves would be outscored 10-2 and take the eventual loss, 16-6.
Bisharat and Morabito led the Seawolves scoring with two goals each. Risden and Anna O'Connell each had one goal as well. Ariel Lockshaw started in the cage for Sonoma State and had 10 saves, along with two steals. Courtney Risden saw action in the cage, coming in at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Risden contributed two saves.
Game 2: Sonoma State 8, Colorado State 6
In their second game of the day, Sonoma State looked to split in day one of the Santa Clara Invitational and took on WWPA foe, Colorado State. Three goals from Hummel led the Seawolves to an 8-6 victory.
Bisharat put Sonoma State on top in the first quarter, scoring her first of two goals at the 5:16 mark of the first quarter. The Rams would answer back later in the first quarter to tie it at 1-1. Sonoma State scored one more goal in the first and one in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
SSU came out of the locker room looking to extend its lead, scoring two goals in the beginning of the third quarter giving the Seawolves a 5-1 lead. CSU went on a scoring streak, scoring five goals, but it would not be enough as Sonoma State scored two more to get the win, 8-6.
Hummel led the Seawolves offense with three goals. Bisharat added two goals to her weekend total, while Alexa May and Lindsay Rangel each added one goal in the victory. Ariel Lockshaw protected the cage with 10 saves and two steals.
Sonoma State will play two more matches on Sunday to close out its weekend at the Santa Clara Invitational. Game one will be against CSU Bakersfield at 8:45 a.m.
