LA JOLLA, Calif. --
Caitlin Risden and
Adrienne Bisharat netted three goals apiece as 10 of the 15 Sonoma State women's water polo players, who saw action against Cal State San Bernardino, scored at least one goal, helping the seventh-seeded Seawolves to a dominating 17-9 win over the ninth-seeded Coyotes in the consolation bracket play-in game to open day two of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Women's Championship Tournament in La Jolla.
Later on Saturday afternoon, Sonoma State would take a two-goal lead over third-seeded CSU Bakersfield with 6:33 left in regulation, but the Roadrunners would rally for four unanswered goals in the final minutes to stun SSU with a come-from-behind, 13-11 decision. The Seawolves will now compete for seventh place in the WWPA tournament, going up against fifth-seeded Santa Clara at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Sonoma State 17, Cal State San Bernardino 9 -- Highlights
The Seawolves sprinted to a large 7-0 lead just 8:15 into the match, including a pair of goals scored by both
Lindsay Rangel and Bisharat. It wasn't until the 7:15 mark of the second period that the Coyotes put one on the board, followed by another a little less than a minute later, but that would be all the CSUSB offense would muster up in the first 16 minutes. Meanwhile, Sonoma State went on to score four more goals before halftime to hold a significant 11-2 lead.
Cal State San Bernardino would have its most productive quarter offensively in the third, throwing four balls into the cage, but Sonoma State added a couple of goals as well to hold a seven-goal lead at 13-6, heading into the fourth and final period.
Risden,
Bridgette Souza,
Sally Aster and
Colette Reid each went on to score goals in the final 6:34 of regulation, helping the Seawolves finish the match on cruise control, winning 17-8 and knocking the Coyotes out of the tournament. Cal State San Bernardino ends its season at 4-37.
Sonoma State goalie
Ariel Lockshaw, who was named the WWPA's Co-Newcomer of the Year earlier this week, made 13 stops between the posts before giving way to
Courtney Risden in the final eight minutes; Risden recorded three saves in her appearance.
CSU Bakersfield 13, Sonoma State 11 -- Highlights
In an extremely tight match, neither team would lead by more than two goals at any one time. It would be Sonoma State that would hold the lead for much of the evening, however, as CSU Bakersfield never pulled ahead until the 3:23 mark of the third quarter when the Roadrunners scored to take a 7-6 lead.
After trading several points, the Seawolves finally regained a two-goal advantage on a pair of occasions, the last being an 11-9 lead on a goal by
Brittny Hummel with 6:33 to play in the fourth period. That's when CSUB took over, firing in four unanswered goals in a span of four minutes while holding SSU scoreless, capping off the come-from-behind 13-11 victory.
Bisharat again continued the offensive assault for Sonoma State, rocketing in four goals, adding to her Saturday total of seven.
Alexa May and Hummel added two goals each in the loss and Lockshaw made 11 saves in the cage.
