BOX SCORE Box Score: UC San Diego 6, Sonoma State 4
LA JOLLA, Calif. --
Joel Thys went 2 for 4 with three RBI's and a run scored,
Devon Zenn added a pair of hits and scored twice, but host UC San Diego scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and, despite allowing a run by Sonoma State in the ninth, the Tritons held on for the 6-4 victory on Sunday in La Jolla to complete the four-game sweep of the Seawolves this weekend. With the loss, SSU (18-14, 16-8 CCAA) surrenders its spot atop the CCAA standings to UCSD (21-15, 19-9 CCAA).
With a sweep on their minds, the Tritons came to life early, plating a run on a Nick La Face single to take the early 1-0 lead. It wouldn't take long for the Seawolves to punch right back, however, as back-to-back doubles by Thys and Jeff Boulware brought home a pair of runs to give Sonoma State a 2-1 advantage.
The SSU lead would end up being shortlived as UCSD rebounded with a couple of runs in its half of the second inning to regain the one-run lead at 3-2. After a scoreless third inning by both teams, the Seawolves would score the equalizer in the fourth on an RBI groundout that scored
Garrett Gooselaw from third base.
From then on, it became a battle between Sonoma State's
Harmen Sidhu and UC San Diego's Greg Selarz. They would both settle in, but
Paul Anaya came on in relief of Sidhu at the start of the seventh. Sidhu would retire his first three batters in order, but in the bottom of the eighth, the Triton bats came alive once again, scoring three runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead and chase Anaya from the ballgame.
Michael Garber stopped the bleeding with two straight strikeouts, but the damage would already be done.
Down by three,
Devon Zenn would start the Sonoma State rally with a leadoff single, then would advance to second on a groundball by
Garrett Gooselaw that was misplayed by UC San Diego shortstop Garrett Tuck, allowing both Zenn and Gooselaw to be safe. Thys would then deliver an RBI single, scoring Zenn and moving Gooselaw up 90 feet to second base. However, UCSD reliever Tony York would eventually get the job done, striking out Boulware and getting
Jeff Johnson to groundout to end the ballgame and the series.
Anaya (2-1) would be tagged with the loss, his first of the season. He allowed three runs on three hits, all coming in the UCSD eighth inning. Sidhu worked the first six frames, giving up six hits, three runs and two walks while striking out five. Garber fanned the only two batters he saw.
Offensively, Zenn, Thys and
Danny Dworkin pounded out two hits apiece, accounting for six of the nine Sonoma State base hits in the contest. Nine different UC San Diego players had a hit in its winning effort on Saturday. Richard Kilbury (2-0) earned the victory after just one inning of work on the mound for the Tritons, allowing a hit and fanning one.
Sonoma State will continue its 10-game road trip with another four-game series at Cal State L.A., starting next Friday in Los Angeles; first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. After a doubleheader next Saturday and a single game next Sunday at CSULA, the Seawolves will then return home for a much-anticipated series with archrival Chico State. The first three games of that series will be played on Apr. 20-21 at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park before the two teams finish the series at Raley Field in Sacramento, the home of the Triple-A Sacramento RiverCats, on Apr. 22.
