Sonoma State 5, UC Santa Cruz 0 (Exhibition) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- With two very successful and impressive scrimmages in the past week under its belt, the Sonoma State women's soccer team continued its offensive showcase on Sunday, defeating UC Santa Cruz, 5-0, in an exhibition friendly at the Seawolf Soccer Field in Rohnert Park.
Margi Osmundson torched the Banana Slug defense for three goals and
Elena Catania added two as the Seawolves cruised to the five-goal victory in their final tune up before the 2012 regular season gets underway on Thursday against Grand Canyon in St. George, Utah.
Sonoma State peppered UC Santa Cruz goalkeeper Monica Chazen with 30 shots, 17 of which came in the opening half. Catania would get the Seawolves on the board in the 12th minute after taking a rebound off the crossbar and blasting it into the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later at 16:36, Osmundson would score the first goal of her eventual hat trick with assists from
Ashley Martin and
Gretel Amman.
With a 2-0 going into the second half, Osmundson struck again, netting an unassisted goal at 54:02. Catania matched Osmundson for her second goal of the match at 66:42 to put the Seawolves up 4-0. Then, to put the point on the exclamation mark, Osmundson connected for goal number three of the afternoon after taking an entry pass from
Bree Robles, who served the ball from the right side of the box, then kicking the ball out of mid-air, up and over UCSC's Chazen for the 5-0 lead and eventual win.
An all-around effort resulted in a lopsided box score in favor of Sonoma State, as the Seawolves had more shots (30-2), shots on goal (15-0) and corner kicks (9-2) than the Banana Slugs on Sunday. Nine of the 30 SSU shots came off the foot of Catania while 12 other Seawolves recorded at least one shot as well.
Goalkeepers
Alexis Sciacqua,
Tess Hack and
Tara Funk earned a combined shutout as each played equal minutes between the posts for Sonoma State. The three Seawolf netminders encountered just two shots the entire match, one that was blocked at the 37:42 mark and another that sailed high at the 81:48 mark. Meanwhile, UC Santa Cruz's Chazen kept busy on her end, making 10 saves on Sunday.
Sonoma State, which was picked to finish second in the CCAA North Division standings, according to a preseason vote of the conference coaches, will begin its 2012 campaign on Thursday when the Seawolves travel to St. George, Utah to face Grand Canyon at 4:00 pm.
