Seawolves Sprint Past Saints In 2012 Season Opener, 4-0

BOX SCORE Sonoma State 4, Saint Martin's 0 -- Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz.
-- On Friday night, the number 59 proved to be lucky for the Sonoma State men's soccer team.  Taylor Varnadore scored the first goal of the season just 59 seconds before halftime, Jomed Tejan added a score in the 59th minute, then Brenton Frame put the game away with a pair of goals in a span of 59 seconds late in the second half as the Sonoma State men's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over Saint Martin's on Friday night at the Grand Canyon University Soccer Field in Phoenix, Ariz.

It becomes the fifth straight year that the Seawolves have opened the regular season with a win.

"It took a while for us to get in the groove tonight," head coach Marcus Ziemer said.  "We created a number of chances that we didn't finish.  We played well, but they pressured us, we were expecting something different from them.  Then, right before the half, Varnadore scored a nice goal to give us the lead."

Varnadore's goal at 44:01 was the last of nine shots by Sonoma State in the opening half, as the Seawolves outshot the Saints 9-5 in the first 45 minutes of the match.  SSU also recorded four of the five corner kicks in the half.

"At halftime, we regrouped and reorganized, then we came out and played very well in the second half; we made adjustments and we controlled game," Ziemer added.  "Varnadore set up a nice goal for Jomed to give us the 2-0 lead, then we were able to sub quite a few guys in and out."

With said substitutions, Frame came on and netted two goals, the first at 81:48 with the second following at 82:47.

"Our bench was very important tonight, including Brenton, who came in and scored two very nice goals.  Brenton's second goal was a great individual effort on his part.  (Anders) Perez came in and played well on the wing, he was dangerous and he worked hard defensively.  (Nico) Spann was crucial and (Cam) Leaver came in and had an outstanding game for us."

When the final whistle blew, the Seawolves led 16-7 in shots (7-2 in the second half), 8-4 in shots on goal, and the ultimate stat, 4-0 in goals scored.

"We'll enjoy this one tonight," Ziemer exclaimed, "then we'll get ready to play a very good team in Grand Canyon on Sunday."
