BOX SCORE #24 Sonoma State 3, Cal State L.A. 2 (14-25, 25-18, 33-31, 18-25, 18-16) -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- In a hard-fought, five-game match, the Sonoma State women's volleyball team overcame Cal State Los Angeles, 3-2. In a somewhat sloppy game by both teams, the Seawolves battled through a team hitting average of .179 to squeak out the win. After the loss to Chico State, SSU has won three in a row and has improved to 11-3, 5-1 CCAA. CSULA drops to 5-9, 3-4 CCAA.
Cal State L.A. got out to a fast start with a 9-4 lead and didn't let up taking this one to very end with a convincing 25-14 win over SSU in the first game. Down 1-0 in the match, the Seawolves had to strike back. There would be seven ties leading up to a 9-9 score in game two, but Sonoma State went on a 17-9 run, involving three
Brooke Moore kills, to win the game 25-18 and tie the match at 1-1.
Fans would get to witness free volleyball as game three turned into a win-by-two situation. A back and forth game throughout, neither team led by more than two points. With the Seawolves unable to put it away at 24-23, CSULA tied it at 24-24 to send the game into the proverbial overtime. However, a service error by the Eagles and a
Madelyn Densberger kill allowed for Sonoma State to take game three by a score of 33-31, giving SSU the 2-1 match advantage.
Cal State Los Angeles came out with a vengence in game four, looking to push the match to the deciding game five. After a close game in the early going, the Eagles began to make a run, taking a 15-8 lead. Both teams shared points, en route to a 25-18 Cal State L.A. win and a 2-2 tie for the match.
As to be expected, game five was as close as it gets. Moore started it off with a kill for the first point of the game. In fact, Sonoma State won the first point in four out five games in the match. However, the Eagles didn't let things get out of hand and quickly tied the game at two points a piece. Again, with neither team leading by more than two points the entire game, game five would need extra points to be decided.
Down by one and needing a clutch point,
Kelsey Hull came through, introducing a ball to the hardwood via spike to tie the game at 16-16.
Regan Richert fed off the emotional kill and blocked CSULA's Reanna Hill to take a 17-16 lead. With the game on the line, an Eagle attack error by Loreal Carter ended the game and the match, giving Sonoma State the 18-16 game win and the 3-2 match win.
The Seawolves Densberger led all SSU hitters with 14 kills, coming at a .333 clip. Four other SSU players came in with double-digit kills, including Hull (13),
Ally Sather (12),
Caylie Seitz (11) and Moore (10).
Devin Shaver and
Hayley Ross split setting duties and had 33 and 29 assists, respectively. Libero,
Nicole Gragnola, collected 25 digs, while Ross and Hull each contributed 10 from the back line.
For the Eagles, Marquis Mora led all hitters with 19 kills. Carter and Samantha Potter each connected 12 balls with the hardwood floor. Setter Alexandra Bura dished out 42 assists, and April Reyes dug out 15 balls.
Sonoma State ends their five game road trip in the city by the bay, when they take on San Francisco State on Oct. 3. The match is slated to start at 7:00 p.m. at The Swamp.
