Seawolves Pull Off Top 20 Upset; Split On Day One At UCSB

Adrienne Bisharat netted a hat trick in Sonoma's upset victory over No. 18 Cal Baptist on Saturday.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Behind three goals from Adrienne Bisharat, the Sonoma State women's water polo team was able to pull off their second overtime win in three games.  This time, it was a 10-9 upset victory over eighteenth-ranked Cal Baptist on Saturday evening, wrapping up day one of the UCSB Winter Invite.  However, SSU was unable to pull out a win over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara in the morning session, losing 10-5.  With the win, the Seawolves improve to 2-1 overall.

#15 UC SANTA BARBARA 10, SONOMA STATE 5

In an early match that started at 11:20 am, UC Santa Barbara got off to a hot start, netting four goals in the first quarter, to Sonoma States one.  The Seawolves were able to put one more goal into the back of cage in the second quarter, however, the Gauchos threw two in to put them ahead 6-2 at halftime.  With their minds set on a second-half comeback, SSU came out of the break and scored one more goal in the third quarter, while UCSB was able to get three balls passed the outstretched hand of SSU goaltender Ariel Lockshaw to put the score at 9-3 with one quarter remaining.  Sonoma State was able to outscore UC Santa Barbara in the fourth quarter, 2-1, but it was not enough as UCSB came out with the 10-5 victory.

Five different players were scoring factors for Sonoma State.  Cari Albers netted her first goal of the season, while Laura Kunz, Alexa May, Colette Reid and Noelle Herrera all chipped in one goal each in the loss.  Lockshaw got the start in the cage and was able to make five saves in the game.  For the Gouchos, their scoring attack was led by Jessie Porter, Bryn Hudson, and Holly Smith who each totaled two goals in the win.  Lauren Martin, Shelby Haroldson, Rachel Nelson, and Samantha Murphy contributed with one goal apiece in the victory .  The Gauchos split time with their goalie as Mackenzie Brokaw was able to tally six saves, while Ruth Milne had two saves.

SONOMA STATE 10, #18 CAL BAPTIST 9 (OT)

After a few hours of down time, Sonoma State came out with a vengence, outscoring Cal Baptist 2-1 in the first quarter.  Both offenses came out strong in the second quarter as both teams were able to put three balls into the cage.  However, SSU would have the one-point edge at halftime, leading 5-4.  The Lancers came out strong in the third quarter, netting three goals in the period, to SSU's one, to take a one-point lead heading into the final quarter, 7-6.  In the fourth quarter, Cal Baptist attempted to put the Seawolves away with two goals, but Sonoma State would not go quietly, netting three goals of their own to knot the game at 9-9 and send the game into overtime.  Sonoma State scored just one goal in the two overtime periods, but that was all they needed for the 10-9 upset victory.  Also of note, the Seawolves are 2-2 in the all-time series with Cal Baptist.

In addition to Bisharat's hat trick, Colette Reid and freshman Noelle Herrera were able to throw in two balls passed the Cal Baptist goaltender.  Natalie Del Carlo, Alexa May, and Brittny Hummel all contributed with one goal apiece.  Sonoma State goalkeeper Ariel Lockshaw had a big day in the cage, saving 12 balls from entering; she also had one steal.  For the Lancers, Hannah Evans led the way with a hat trick, while Molly Gritchen and Laura Kocsis each scored two goals.  Kim Latschaw and Samantha Banks pitched in with one score each.  Lina Medeiros tallied 13 saves in the loss.

Sonoma State will try and ride the momentum from their big win into Sunday when they take on No. 19 UC San Diego at 10:20am  and No. 16 Cal State Northridge at 3:00pm, as a part of day two at the UCSB Winter Invite.
