SANTA BARBARA-- After an uplifting victory over No. 18 Cal Baptist on Saturday, the Sonoma State women's water polo team looked to stretch their momentum into more wins over ranked opponents during day two of the UCSB Winter Invite. However, the Seawolves were unable to find a win, as they lost to No. 19 UC San Diego 11-6, and were upended by No. 16 Cal State Northridge 11-4. Sonoma State went 1-3 over the weekend, bringing them to a 2-3 overall record early in 2013 season.
UC SAN DIEGO 11, SONOMA STATE 6
Sonoma State came out strong against the Tritons of UC San Diego, netting three goals in the first quarter. The Seawolves defense also came to play as they blanked the Tritons in the first quarter, to take a 3-0 lead. However, UCSD did not go away, coming back to score five goals in the second quarter, to SSU's two goals, to bring the game to a 5-5 tie at halftime. After the intermission, it was Sonoma State who failed to record a goal as UC San Diego was firing on all cylinders, tallying four goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 9-5 lead going into the final quarter. Sonoma State was able to fire one into the back of cage in the fourth quarter, but UC San Diego's two goals put the game out of reach, as the Seawolves took the 11-6 loss.
The six Sonoma State goals were scored by five different players as
Colette Reid led the way with two scores.
Adrienne Bisharat,
Laura Kunz,
Natalie Del Carlo, and
Alexa May all recorded one goal each in the loss.
Ariel Lockshaw tallied 10 saves and a steal in the cage for Sonoma State. For the Tritons, Sarah Lizotte led all scorers with six goals in the victory, while Rachel Brooks, Melissa Bartow, Alexis Wieseler, Julia Kirkland, and Lauren Finwall all pitched in with one goal apiece. UC San Diego goalkeeper Courtney Miller recorded six saves.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 11, SONOMA STATE 4
It was rough seas for Sonoma State in their final game of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite as the Seawolves couldn't string together a rally to upset the sixteenth-ranked Matadors of Cal State Northridge. Sonoma State scored one goal in each of the four quarters, but could not keep CSUN out of the cage as they scored 11 times en route to an 11-4 victory over the Seawolves.
Sonoma State's four goals came from the hands of
Laura Kunz, Katie Elam (her first collegiate goal),
Alexa May, and
Noelle Herrera, each of which scored one time.
Ariel Lockshaw got the start in the cage for SSU, recording five saves, while
Kayley Kemp saw time in the pool and recorded three saves.
Sonoma State will be back in action this Thursday, January 31, 2013 when Hawaii University makes the trip to the mainland for their season opener. First sprint is set for 3:00pm in Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool on the campus of Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, California.
