ROHNERT PARK-- After a good showing at the UCSB Winter Invite last weekend, the Sonoma State women's water polo team came back home to face off against No. 11 University of Hawaii. Jet lag was not an issue for Hawaii as they were able to net 16 goals against the Seawolves, giving SSU their fourth loss of the season, with a final score of 16-3. With the loss, Sonoma State drops to 2-4 overall.
Hawaii came out firing, getting on the baord first on a Paula Chillida Esforzado goal just 26 seconds into the game. However, Sonoma State answered quickly when
Jessica Stansfield threw one in 20 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 in the early going. Hawaii would go on to score three more goals in the first quarter to lead 4-1. Sonoma State was unable to score in the second quarter, while Hawaii netted two goals to take a 6-1 lead at halftime.
With hopes of staging a second-half comeback,
Brittny Hummel was able to get a ball passed the outstretched hands of Hawaii goaltender Clair Babinski in the third quarter, to bring the score to 9-2. However, Hawaii's offense could not be slowed down, as they would score five goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 11-2 lead, heading into the final quarter. It was all Hawaii in the fourth quarter as well, as Sonoma State could not rally late.
Kaysie Lewis scored her first goal of her collegiate career in the fourth quarter but, it would not match up to Hawaii's offense as they were able to put in five more goals to take the convincing 16-3 victory.
Lewis, Hummel, and Stansfield made up the offense for Sonoma State, each scoring one goal in the game. Sonoma State Goalkeeper
Ariel Lockshaw had nine saves in the cage in addition to one steal. Hawaii was able to spread the ball around as nine different players had at least one goal. Danielle Lewis, Monique Wilson, Monika Eggens, Caity Lopes da Silva, Amarens Genee, Mackenzie Edwards and Esforzado all had two goals in the victory. Contriubuting one goal each in the win was Katie Teets and Zoe Respondek. Clair Babinski recorded 10 ten saves in the cage for Hawaii.
Sonoma State will try to bounce back when they travel to Hayward tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 1) to take on Cal State East Bay in a Western Water Polo Association showdown at Pioneer Pool. First sprint is set for 1:00 pm.
