BOX SCORE Cal State East Bay 3, #11 Sonoma State 2 (25-19, 13-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-12) -- Box Score
HAYWARD, Calif. -- Caylie Seitz had 22 kills with a .396 hitting percentage and
Kelsey Hull added 15, but the 11th-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team couldn't rally from a 2-1 match deficit in a nailbiting five-set loss to host Cal State East Bay on Friday night at Pioneer Gym in Hayward. The Seawolves see their eight-match win streak come to an end in falling to 15-3 overall and 8-2 in the CCAA. The Pioneers improve to 7-11 (3-7 CCAA).
Despite holding an edge in most statistical categories, including kills (59-57), hitting percentage (.257-.242), assists (57-54), service aces (6-3), sideout percentage (.63-.59) and points (74-73), the Seawolves just couldn't overcome a Pioneer block party in which Cal State East Bay recorded 13 total blocks, including five solo rejections.
It was a see-saw battle right from the beginning; the match featured 26 ties and seven lead changes. After the Seawolves dropped the first set 25-19, they came back with a vengance to earn a convincing 25-13 win to even the match at one set apiece. However, the Pioneers put the pressure on the nation's 11th-ranked team with a 25-21 win in the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
With its back against the wall, Sonoma State came out with a 25-17 win in set number four to force a deciding fifth set. SSU took an early 4-1 lead, but CSUEB would slowly chip away. With the Seawolves up 8-7, the Pioneers reeled off five straight points to take a 12-8 lead in the first-to-15 frame, inducing two Sonoma timeouts during the run. SSU would then score two straight points to come within two at 12-10, but the teams traded points from then on out until CSUEB claimed the 15-12 win and the 3-2 match victory.
Seitz and Hull combined for 37 of the team's 59 kills while
Madelyn Densberger and
Regan Richert chipped in with nine and eight, respectively.
Nicole Gragnola had a team-high 16 digs and
Rachel Andrews was in on six blocks, including one solo stop -- as a team, the Seawolves had nine total blocks.
Katie Allen led Cal State East Bay with 19 kills and a .471 hitting percentage. Veronica Sanchez led all players with 24 digs.
Sonoma State looks to rebound Saturday night when it travels to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay; first serve from the Otter Sports Center is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
