SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- For the first time since 1995, the Sonoma State volleyball team has defeated Cal State San Bernardino, ending a 33-match losing streak with a 3-1 upset victory on Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena. The 14th-ranked Seawolves, who entered the match having won just three sets over the Coyotes since the start of the 2001 season (a span of 26 matches), hand CSU San Bernardino (16-5, 11-1 CCAA) its first conference loss of the season while improving to 17-4 and 10-3 in the CCAA.
Sonoma State's powerful offense was on showcase Saturday night as the CCAA's top-hitting team recorded a sizzling .315 hitting percentage with 61 kills in 146 attacks erring 15 times.
Caylie Seitz was merely unstoppable, firing a .452 clip with a match-high 18 kills while
Madelyn Densberger and
Kelsey Hull added 13 and 12 kills, respectively. As a team, the Seawolves had more kills (61-50), assists (57-45), aces (6-4), total blocks (7.0-5.0), solo blocks (4-2), points (74.0-59.0) and a better hitting percentage (.315-.206) than the conference-leading Coyotes.
Cal State San Bernardino took an early 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 win in the first set that featured seven ties and three lead changes. The Coyotes hit at a fiery .346 clip in the opening frame, smashing 13 kills with just two errors in 26 swings while holding the Seawolves to just .118.
While the hosts had the momentum to begin set number two, Sonoma State wasn't about to give up. In fact, the Seawolves never trailed again the rest of the way, paving the path to end their misery against the Coyotes. CSU San Bernardino forced five ties in the second set, pulling into a 14-14 tie, but the Seawolves reeled off five straight points and never looked back. The Seawolves only got hotter as the night went on, including an errorless fourth set in which Sonoma hit .471 with 16 kills in 34 attacks en route to the match-clinching 25-19 win.
Densberger notched a double-double in the victory with her aforementioned 13 kills, adding a team-high 13 digs.
Nicole Gragnola had 11 digs as
Rachel Andrews made three blocks, two of the solo variety. Densberger, Hull and
Ashley Robinson also had two blocks each on Saturday.
The victory was head coach
Bear Grassl's first against Cal State San Bernardino in his 12-year coaching career at SSU, he is now 1-24 versus longtime Coyote head coach Kim Cherniss.
Sonoma State returns home next weekend for a brief two-match homestand before heading back out on the road for five straight matches. The Seawolves will play host to Cal State L.A. on Friday at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
