BOX SCORE Dominican 80, Sonoma State 78 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Brandon Glanz came off the bench to lead all players with 24 points and corral a team-high nine rebounds in 27 minutes of work, but visiting Dominican broke a 78-78 tie on a 10-foot jumper with two seconds left in regulation and held on to beat host Sonoma State, 80-78, on Friday night at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park as part of the 13th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic. The Seawolves open the 2013-14 campaign with an 0-1 record while the Penguins improve to 3-0 this season.
In the first game of the Logsdon Classic on Friday, Cal State East Bay held off Fresno Pacific for its first win of the season,
82-77.
Dominican sprinted out of the gate, scoring 13 of the first 15 points in the contest to take a 13-2 lead just four and a half minutes in. Sonoma State missed its first six shots and it wasn't until a layup by Glanz at the 14:13 mark that SSU netted its first bucket, but the Seawolves cut their deficit to seven (13-6) -- the first four points were scored from the free throw line.
Sonoma continued to chip away and eventually went on an 11-0 run midway through the first half to grab a 29-23 lead at the 4:27 mark. Both teams would trade baskets from there on out and the hosts would hold a 35-32 lead at the half, despite shooting 32.3 percent from the floor (10-31) and allowing Dominican to connect on more than half of its shots (14-27) at 51.9 percent.
On a pair of occasions, SSU held seven-point leads at the start of the second half, the last being a 51-44 advantage with 14:44 left in regulation, but it would turn into a seven-point deficit at 78-71 with 3:54 remaining. However, the Seawolves scored seven unanswered points, including a layin by
Sterling Arterberry with 12 seconds on the clock to knot the game at 78-78. That's when Dominican took the ball the length of the court and Myles Carrillo nailed a jumper from the right side for the two-point lead. On the ensuing throw in, the Seawolves were forced to toss up a hail mary, but the throw would end up short and the Penguins escaped with the 80-78 win to remain undefeated on the season.
Arterberry recorded 14 points and had four rebounds in the loss and
Jason Walter was the only starter to score in double-figures, tallying 10. As a team, Sonoma State connected on 32.3 percent of shots from the field, including just 4 of 18 from three-point range. On the other side, Dominican torched the nets with a 54.4 percent efficiency on 31 of 57 from the hardwood (and 5 of 15 from long range). Dominique Taplin brought in a double-double, scoring a team-high 22 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Four other Penguins also scored in double-figures, including 14 from Connor Haysbert.
Sonoma State wraps up the 13th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic on Saturday when it plays host to Fresno Pacific at 7:30 pm, following the Dominican/Cal State East Bay game at 5:30 pm.
