ROHNERT PARK -- Caylie Seitz led all hitters with 13 kills, breaking the single-season record for most kills by a sophomore in program history, as the 15th-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team cruised to its 15th sweep of the season with Friday's 3-0 victory over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay at The Wolves' Den.
The Seawolves, who remain fourth in the NCAA west regional poll behind UC San Diego, BYU-Hawaii and Cal State San Bernardino, respectively, improve to 24-5 -- tying SSU's single-season wins record -- and 17-4 in the CCAA. The Otters sink to 17-12 and 11-10 in conference action.
One more regular season match remains for Sonoma State, which will honor three seniors prior to Saturday's season finale --
Nicole Gragnola,
Hayley Ross and
Devin Shaver. The Seawolf trio will be playing in their final collegiate home match on Saturday.
On Friday, the Seawolves were true to form, amassing for 44 kills and sporting a .257 hitting percentage while holding the Otters to .072 on just 28 kills. Seitz's season kills tally is up to 404, which breaks the previous sophomore kills record of 401 by former SSU student-athlete Keala Peterson in 2009.
Kelsey Hull added 12 kills in the victory while
Madelyn Densberger chipped in with seven.
The Seawolf defense was again stifling on Friday. In fact, the hosts kept the CCAA's kill leader, Julia Ashen, to just seven kills and a negative hitting percentage (-.042). Ashen came into the match with a conference-leading 485 kills. Gragnola recorded a match-high 15 digs, upping her season total to 469 and her career tally to 1,256. Ross and Shaver split the setting duties as they have done for the better part of three seasons, accounting for 24 and 16 assists, respectively.
