BOX SCORE #15 Sonoma State 3, Cal State East Bay 0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-9) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- No one in all of Division II could have stopped the 15th-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team on Saturday as the Seawolves (25-5, 18-4 CCAA) demolished visiting Cal State East Bay in three sets to earn their record-breaking 25th victory of the season and wrap up the 2013 regular season in second place in the CCAA standings, one game ahead of third-place UC San Diego and three games behind now-eight-time conference champion Cal State San Bernardino. The Pioneers see their season come to an end at 11-19 (7-15 CCAA).
The Sonoma State defense held Cal State East Bay to just 33 total points in the entire match, including just nine in the clinching third set. If revenge was the game plan after CSUEB snapped SSU's eight-match win streak in a five-set thriller back on Oct. 18, then the Seawolves executed it perfectly. The 33 points allowed was the lowest number of points given up in a match since Sonoma State gave up just 28 back on Sept. 4, 2009 in a three-set sweep over Evergreen State (Wash.) by set scores of 25-9, 25-6, 25-13.
Three Seawolves recorded double-figure digs, led by
Madelyn Densberger's 13, followed by 12 from
Hayley Ross and 11 from
Nicole Gragnola. Meanwhile, the Sonoma State offense was as hot as it has been in years. SSU hit .448 -- the highest since Oct. 21, 2011 -- amassing for 50 kills in just 96 attacks, erring only seven times to improve upon its CCAA-leading hitting percentage to .276, nearly 40 points higher than CSUSB.
Kelsey Hull was unstoppable, slamming 10 kills in 17 swings without an error (.588),
Caylie Seitz led all players with 17 kills while hitting at a sizzling .500 clip with three errors in 28 attacks and
Ashley Robinson chipped in with six kills on eight attempts, also without an error (.750).
Devin Shaver had a match-high 18 assists as Ross handed out 14.
For Cal State East Bay, no player had more than five kills as Suzy Ni Xu had only that. As a team, the Pioneers recorded just 16 kills, erring 12 times in 91 swings, an .044 clip.
Sonoma State is expected to qualify for its sixth-straight NCAA tournament appearance, but the official announcement won't be made until Monday at 4:30 pm Pacific Time when the entire NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament bracket is released via a live selection show at NCAA.com. In each of the past six seasons, head coach
Bear Grassl and the Seawolves are 133-45 (.747), but are just 2-5 in NCAA tournament games during that span, reaching the west region final back in 2011.
Saturday also marked the final home match for three SSU seniors --
Nicole Gragnola,
Hayley Ross and
Devin Shaver. The trio of Seawolves have helped the team to an impressive 87-31 record during their four-year careers at Sonoma State.
