ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State men's basketball team got off to a hot start, taking a 9-2 lead less than four minutes into the game, but its 23 turnovers, including 12 in the second half, allowed visiting Cal State Stanislaus to turn them into 23 points, spelling defeat for the Seawolves, 67-61, on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. Sonoma falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in CCAA play and the Warriors remain undefeated on the year at 5-0 (2-0 CCAA).
Sterling Arterberry led the way with 15 points and five rebounds, followed by 12 points from
James Davis and 10 from
Justin Herold. Both
Brandon Glanz and
Mike Harris tallied nine points each, leaving just six points scored by bench players, five of which came from
David Ahern.
Both teams were nearly identical in shooting from the field, but Cal State Stanislaus took 18 more shots than Sonoma State, converting 26 of their 59 attempts, a 44.1 percent clip. The Seawolves were 18 of 41 from the floor (43.9 percent). Both teams took 17 shots from beyond the three-point arc, but the Seawolves hit more of them (8-6). SSU also knocked down 17 of 21 shots from the free throw line, whereas CSUS was just 9 of 16, but the Warriors made up for its inefficiency at the stripe by outscoring the Seawolves 23-11 in points off turnovers. The visitors also held the advantage in the paint (26-14) and was successful in transition, scoring 11 points on the fast break to SSU's zero.
After Sonoma took the seven point lead early, Stanislaus turned it around to a six point lead (21-15) at the 5:33 mark of the first half. However, the Seawolves closed the gap and with a three-pointer by Davis with just seconds left on the clock before halftime, it knotted the game at 29-29 at the intermission.
The momentum continued into the second half for SSU and a layup by Ahern at the 9:52 mark put the hosts up by six (48-42). That's when Cal State Stanislaus went on its run, turning its deficit into a seven-point 61-54 lead six minutes later and would hold on for the six-point win.
The Warriors were led by Tyler Barber, who scored a game-high 16 points off the bench in 23 minutes of action. Marcus Bell chipped in with 10.
Sonoma State returns to the floor on Saturday night, hosting archrival Chico State at 7:30 pm in The Wolves' Den.
