BOX SCORE Cal State Dominguez Hills 74, Sonoma State 72 -- Box Score
CARSON, Calif. -- In an extremely tight game throughout, in a game where neither team lead by more than six points at any time, it was only fitting that the result would come down to the final second. A three-pointer by
Will Olsem with 1:46 left in regulation put Sonoma State up by four, but host Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the final six points of the contest, including the game-winner by Myron Green with 0.5 seconds on the clock to beat the Seawolves, 74-72, on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson.
SSU drops to 9-12 overall and 7-10 in the CCAA, good for eighth in the standings with five regular season games to play. The Toros earn the season sweep of the Seawolves, improving to 13-11 (9-8 CCAA).
Despite the fact that there were 13 ties and 14 lead changes throughout the contest, the Seawolves held a lead for just under 27 minutes, nearly 18 minutes longer than the Toros did. In fact, the largest CSUDH lead in the game came at the 17:37 mark of the first half when the hosts scored the first four points of the night. SSU came back and held six-point leads several times in the game, but never more than that, and the Seawolves would hold onto a narrow 32-30 lead at the intermission.
As it was in the first half, the second half continued to be a see-saw battle, neither team was able to distance themselves at any point. Olsem's three-ball with 1:46 left in the game put the Seawolves up 72-68, but over the next 65 seconds, the Toros would erase their deficit with four free throws, two by Lamine Diame and two by Green.
With 32 seconds on the clock, Sonoma State came down the floor, but a turnover by
Patrick Scott gave the ball back to Cal State Dominguez Hills with the game still tied at 72-72. With the shot clock turned off, the Toros came down the floor after a time out and with seconds ticking away, Alex Strauther drove the lane, but dished it off to Green, who drained his 15-foot jump shot from the baseline with just 0.5 seconds remaining. With no timeouts, the Seawolves were forced to inbound the ball and go the length of the floor, but the buzzer would sound before a shot was attempted, signaling the two-point loss for SSU.
Olsem led all players with 24 points, dropping in seven three pointers. Scott chipped in with 21 points on 9 of 19 from the floor while Herold added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 29 minutes. As a team, the Seawolves hit 46 percent of their shots (29-63), including 10 of 25 from long range.
Cal State Dominguez Hills connected on 25 of 48 attempts (52.1 percent), going 7 for 14 from beyond the arc. Green led the Toros with 19 points, followed by 13 from Givon Crump and 11 from Ramon Williams, both off the bench.
Sonoma State returns to action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.
