LA JOLLA, Calif. --
Samantha Lipperd tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout while Keisi Chinen and Ali Palermo both hit home runs to lead No. 19 Sonoma State to a 4-0 victory in the series opener at UC San Diego, but the Tritons
came back with a walk-off 3-2 win in game two as the two teams split Friday's doubleheader at Triton Softball Field.  The Seawolves, who came into the weekend ranked at No. 19 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, move to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA as the Tritons go to 8-8 (4-2 CCAA).

Sonoma State and UC San Diego will wrap up the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday in La Jolla; first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

GAME 1:  #19 Sonoma State 4, UC San Diego 0  --  Box Score

Lipperd returned to prominence in the series opener against the Tritons, allowing just one hit, which would be a leadoff double by Callie Grant in the bottom of the first inning.  With the exception of the fourth inning, in which she would face a bases loaded, one-out situation, Lipperd would cruise the rest of the way to earn a complete-game shutout victory.

In that fourth inning, a couple of walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out.  However, she would get Maria Sykes to strikeout looking, then force Mya Romera to pop out in foul territory to end the threat.  After that, Lipperd retired nine of the next 10 batters she faced to secure her fifth win of the season.  She allowed three walks and struckout five.

Meanwhile, the powerful Sonoma State offense gave Lipperd the breathing room with a run in the second inning on a solo home run by Keisi Chinen, followed by a two-run home run in the fourth inning by Ali Palermo to put the Seawolves up 3-0.  In the sixth inning, Vanessa Currie delivered a one-out RBI double, scoring Ancia Purdy for the 4-0 lead -- and eventual final score.

Purdy went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Holli Brown recorded a hit, in addition to the aforementioned run-producing hits by Chinen, Palermo and Currie.  Currie's double in the sixth inning chased UCSD starter Kayla Hensel from the ballgame after Hensel allowed all six hits and four runs; she also walked two and fanned one.  Her replacement, Alexis Edwards, retired four of the five batters she faced, allowing only one base runner via a walk.

GAME 2:  UC San Diego 3, #19 Sonoma State 2  --  Box Score

The Seawolves continued their momentum into the nightcap, scoring almost immediately.  Chinen, who homered to score the first run of the series in the opener, brought home Megan Konieczka on an infield RBI single.  However, despite Sonoma State loading the bases with one out, UC San Diego allowed only that one run as Triton started Jennifer Manuel worked herself out of the jam.

Another SSU run came around to score in the third inning on an RBI double down the left field line by Chinen, which scored Palermo from second to put the Seawolves up 2-0.  That would prove to be the final run given up by Manuel the rest of the way.

Down by two runs, UC San Diego began making its move in the fourth when Mckenna Clewett recorded an RBI single to center field that scored Amani Proctor from second off of SSU starter Amanda Llerena.  The Tritons then knotted the ballgame at 2-2 in the fifth inning when Nicole Spangler doubled home Emily McQuaid.

Manuel shut down the Sonoma State lineup from the third inning on, only allowing one Seawolf base runner beyond first base in the final four innings.  With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tritons' McQuaid reached on a leadoff infield single, then moved to second base on a bunt single by Grant.  With runners on first and second and no outs, UCSD's Taylor Sepulveda moved the runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt, then Spangler delivered the game-winner to left field, scoring McQuaid.

Llerena (4-2) suffered the loss in the circle for Sonoma State; she allowed 11 hits and three runs (all earned), while striking out two.  Offensively, Chinen went 2 for 3 with two RBI in game two and Currie added another pair of hits as well.

UC San Diego's Manuel (1-0) earned her first win of the season, scattering eight SSU hits, she walked two and struckout one.  Grant, Spangler, Kirsten Willmon, Clewett and McQuaid all had two hits apiece for the Tritons.
