BOX SCORE #22 SONOMA STATE 5, UC SAN DIEGO 1 – BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Harmen Sidhu (3-1) pitched deep into the game once again, throwing eight strong innings, giving up one earned run on three hits while striking our nine, to help the Sonoma State baseball team earn the 5-1 victory over the Tritons of UC San Diego. The Seawolves improve to an 11-4, 3-2 CCAA record, while the Tritons fall to 11-9, 6-7 CCAA.
In what was a pitchers duel through the first three innings, UC San Diego was able to break through to get a run in the top of the fourth on a Richard Seigel single through the right side that scored Danny Susdorf from second base after he singled and stole second to begin the inning. With a 1-0 lead, the Tritons were held silent, as strong pitching from Sidhu and a defense that was able to turn three key double plays, kept UCSD off the base paths.
The twenty-second ranked Seawolves were able to come forth in the sixth inning, plating five runs, four off of UCSD starter Ryan Goodbrand. Coming into the game, Goodbrand sported an impressive 16-0 career record and a 5-0 2013 season record, however, Sonoma State hit him for four runs, handing him the first loss of his career.
Sonoma State batted around the order in the sixth inning, starting off with a
Jackson Stogner single to right field, followed by a well executed bunt by Jeffery Boulware allowing him to be safe at first, and move Stonger to second. After
Sam Montgomery was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Devon Zenn flied out to right field for a sacrifice fly, tying the contest at 1-1.
Steven Filippi was then intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up the force out at any base.
Garrett Gooselaw disregarded the strategy by smacking a bases clearing double down the left field line, recording three RBI's, giving SSU a 4-1 lead. Sonoma State added one more run in the inning when
Scott Harkin singled down the left field line to score Gooselaw from second base, to tally the fifth run of the inning, putting SSU on top 5-1.
After Sidhu pitched two shut down innings in the seventh and eighth innings,
Robert Raymos came in on relief in the ninth. Although Raymos would walk the first batter of the inning, he was able to induce Susdorf to ground into a double play, followed by a Seigel ground out to second base to end the game, giving the Seawolves a 5-1 victory.
With three RBI's, Gooselaw did the most damage offensively, going 1-for-4 at the plate, while scoring a run as well. Boulware was able to record two hits on the day, while Stonger, Filippi, Schwartz, Gooselaw, and Harkin all contributed one hit in the victory. It was a slow day offensively for the Tritons, as the SSU pitching staff held them to three hits, two coming off the bat of Seigel, who also had UCSD's only RBI of the game.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11:00 am at Seawolf Diamond.
