SANTA CLARA, Calif. --
Laura Kunz scored a pair of goals, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team couldn't hold on to a narrow 6-5 halftime lead as host Santa Clara pulled out a nailbiting 9-8 win on Saturday at Sullivan Aquatic Center in Santa Clara.  The Seawolves fall to 6-11 this season, suffering just their second loss against a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opponent (3-2).  The Broncos move to .500 overall at 10-10 and 6-2 in WWPA action.

Sonoma State held a 4-3 lead after the first eight minutes, then a 6-5 lead after 16 minutes, but were held scoreless in the third period of play while surrendering three goals to Santa Clara, which took an 8-6 lead.  The Seawolves would score two more goals in the fourth quarter, but one insurance goal by the Broncos would prove to be the difference as the hosts held on for the one-goal victory.

Kunz was the only Seawolf that caged more than one goal.  Adrienne Bisharat, Alexa May, Jessica Stansfield, Lindsay Rangel, Colette Reid and Jessica Becker all put one in for SSU in the loss.  Ariel Lockshaw, who is closing in on the all-time saves record in a career, stopped seven shots and is nine saves from eclipsing the mark.  The record is 490, set by Kaitlyn Brownrigg in 2006-07, and Lockshaw has 482 in two years with the Seawolves.

Sonoma State will play host to WWPA-foe Cal State East Bay on Friday at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool on the SSU campus.  First sprint is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
