Seawolves Handle FPU; Fall To CSUEB At CCAA Tournament

Noelle Herrera netted a total of four goals on day one of the CCAA Tournament in Fresno
FRESNO, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's water polo team made the trek to Fresno this weekend to participate in the CCAA Tournament where they took on, and beat Fresno Pacific 11-7, but came up short against Cal State East Bay 8-3.  Sonoma State moves to 11-17, 5-6 WWPA after a split of day one at the tournament.

GAME ONE: SONOMA STATE 11, FRESNO PACIFIC 7
The Seawolves got off to a hot start, taking a 3-0 lead after the first quarter with goals by Luara Kunz, Jessica Becker, and Nicole Browning.  Fresno Pacific was able to put two goals on the board in the second quarter, but would still trail by three to SSU, who led 5-2 at the break.

Sonoma State extended their lead to five goals as they outscored FPU 3-1, including a goal from Noelle Herrera, giving SSU an 8-3 lead heading into the final quarter.  While the Sunbirds did outscore the Seawolves 4-3 in the final period, the Seawolves led the entire game, finishing off FPU by a score of 11-7.

Offensively for Sonoma State, Herrera led the way with a hat trick in the win.  Lindsey Rangel contributed two goals, while Cari Albers, Adrienne Bisharat, Kunz, Browning, Colette Reid, and Becker finished with one goal each.  Goaltender Kayley Kemp made the start for Sonoma State and collected six saves, while Ariel Lockshaw played the fourth quarter and recorded two saves.

For Fresno Pacific, Emily Marr led the Sunbirds with three goals of her own while Candice Cobarrubias tallied two scores.  Nia Apodaca and Dani Mortimer chipped in one goal apiece in the loss.

GAME TWO: CAL STATE EAST BAY 8, SONOMA STATE 3
Both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter, but quickly changed in the second when CSUEB put up five goals to SSU's one as the Seawolves trailed 5-1 going into halftime.

The third and fourth quarters saw a defensive battle, however, the Pioneers made the most of it netting one goal in the third quarter and two in the fourth.  Sonoma State cashed in on two goals of its own, but it would not be enough as they suffered the 8-3 loss to CSUEB.

In addition to one goal each from Jessica Stansfield and Reid, Herrera contributed one goal in the loss, her fourth of the first day.  Kemp made the start in the cage for the second straight game for SSU and saved two balls before Lockshaw entered in the middle of the third quarter to make five saves, closing out the game for SSU.

Sunday marks day two of the CCAA tournament, first sprint times have yet to be determined.
