Cal State Monterey Bay 7, Sonoma State 6 -- Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. --
The Sonoma State women's water polo team scored four goals in the first six minutes and five in the first period, but the offense dried up and scored just one more goal in the final three quarters, falling to Cal State Monterey Bay, 7-6, in the third-place match of the CCAA Invitational Tournament, hosted by Fresno Pacific, on Sunday at Clovis North HS in Fresno.  The Seawolves place fourth this weekend, but fall to 11-18 and 5-7 against Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) opponents.

After falling behind 1-0 early on, the Seawolves caged four unanswered goals over a four-minute span to take a 4-1 lead after goals by Adrienne Bisharat, Lindsay Rangel, Colette Reid and Brittny Hummel.  The Otters struck back with back-to-back goals to come within a goal at 4-3, but a score by Nicole Browning with 44 ticks left in the first put SSU up 5-3 after one quarter.

A Cal State Monterey Bay goal at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter got the Otters within a goal at 5-4, but Natalie Del Carlo put Sonoma State up by two at 6-4 heading into the intermission.  However, that would be the last goal scored by the Seawolves in the contest.

Meanwhile, CSUMB tied the match up at 6-6 with 1:14 left in the third, then scored the go-ahead goal with 6:20 remaining in the fourth, but SSU couldn't come up with the equalizer in the final minutes, suffering the narrow loss.

Ariel Lockshaw made four stops in 24 minutes of action while Kayley Kemp, who started the match as the SSU goalie, had one save in the first eight minutes of the contest.

Sonoma State will play one final regular season match before heading to Santa Clara for the WWPA Championship Tournament in two weeks.  The Seawolves will play host to Santa Clara University next Saturday (Apr. 20) at 2:00 p.m. at Rudloff Pool on the SSU campus.
