SANTA CLARA, Calif – The Sonoma State women's water polo team travelled down to Santa Clara to take part in the annual Santa Clara Invitational this Saturday, and was faced with heavy competition. The Seawolves fell twice at the Bronco at the hands of WWPA foes Cal State East Bay and #17 UC San Diego, moving their record to 10-16, 5-5 WWPA.
GAME ONE: CAL STATE EAST BAY 10, SONOMA STATE 8
In game one of the Bronco, Sonoma State found themselves trailing early to Cal State East Bay after being outscored 3-1 in the opening quarter. The Seawolves were able to pull within one goal at a score of 4-3 after goals by
Brittny Hummel and
Lindsay Rangel, but the Pioneer offense cashed in on two goals of their own to take a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Cal State East Bay came out firing in the third quarter, extending their lead to 7-3 within the first minute and twenty-five seconds of the period. Hummel and Rangel tacked on a goal each to their total and
Colette Reid added a goal, all in the third quarter, however Sonoma State still trailed by three, 9-6, at the end of the third quarter. While SSU did outscore CSUEB 2-1 in the fourth quarter, two goals would not be enough to narrow the four point gap as the Seawolves would go on to fall 10-8.
Three players tallied two goals for the Seawolves in Hummel, Rangel and Reid, while
Adrienne Bisharat and
Laura Kunz chipped in with one goal each.
Kayley Kemp received the start in the cage for SSU and recorded six saves.
Offensively for the Pioneers, Jennifer Lightbody recorded a hat trick while Julia Charlesworth, Sara Hudyn and Allison Zell all pitched in with two goals apiece. Marrina Nation made six saves for the Pioneers in the victory.
GAME TWO: #17 UC SAN DIEGO 14, SONOMA STATE 5
In the nightcap at the Bronco in Santa Clara, Sonoma State went up against stiff competition in the 17
th-ranked UC San Diego Tritons. The Seawolves put up a fight behind two goals from
Colette Reid, but the Triton offense was too much for the SSU as they racked up 14 goals behind Sarah Lizotte's four scores in the 14-5 victory.
Brittny Hummel,
Jessica Stansfield and
Jessica Becker each tallied one goal in the loss for Sonoma State. Offensively for the Tritons, Rachel Brooks, Julia Kirkland and Leah Gonzalez each recorded two goals while three other players recorded one goal in the victory.
Ariel Lockshaw recorded nine saves in the cage for Sonoma State.
Sonoma State will compete in the CCAA Championship Tournament next Saturday and Sunday. Seeding has yet to be announced.
