BOX SCORE #16 Sonoma State 3, Cal State L.A. 1 (25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17) -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- Kelsey Hull,
Caylie Seitz and
Madelyn Densberger combined to hammer 44 kills and sport a .396 hitting percentage as the 16th-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team earned its eighth win in its past nine matches with Saturday's four-set victory over host Cal State L.A. in Los Angeles. The Seawolves improve to 10-2 this season and 3-1 in the CCAA while the Golden Eagles fall to 7-5 (2-2 CCAA).
In the three sets that Sonoma State won, it was by identical scores of 25-17, and in those sets (the first, second and fourth), the Seawolves hit above .300 as a team. In the third set, Cal State L.A. won 25-16 after hitting .583 (15k-1e-24a) while holding SSU to just .226.
All told, the Seawolves had a 59-44 advantage in kills and hit at a .338 clip to .240 for the Golden Eagles. The Seawolves had a 7-6 edge in blocks. Both teams struggled at the serving line where Sonoma State had six aces and 13 service errors while Cal State L.A. had just one ace and 10 errors.
Hull was even more dominant than she was the night before at Cal State Dominguez Hills, recording 16 kills with just two errors in 24 attacks (.583) to lead all players. Seitz hit .343 with 15 kills and three miscues in 35 swings and Densberger added 13 kills with three errors in 32 attacks (.313).
The match featured a rarity: the past two American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Players of the Week were on opposing sides -- Cal State L.A.'s Iona Lofrano won the award last week and Sonoma State's Densberger earned it two weeks ago. Lofrano scored a match-high 18 kills, but featured a .260 hitting percentage with five errors in 50 total attacks.
Now in his 12th year at the helm of the program, SSU head coach
Bear Grassl is just four wins away from 200 for his career -- he is now 196-127, including a 118-43 mark since the start of the 2008 season.
Sonoma State returns home on Friday to host Cal State Stanislaus at 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den, the start of a five-match homestand for the Seawolves.
