LOS ANGELES -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team was held to just 20 percent shooting from the floor in Saturday's 78-39 loss to Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles. The Seawolves drop to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA, whereas the Golden Eagles bounced back from a 23-point home loss one night prior to improve to 7-3 (4-2 CCAA).
Hannah Sourek led Sonoma State with 10 points, eight of which came from the free throw line. She added five rebounds and a steal as well. As a team, the Seawolves made just 11 shots on 55 attempts, including a 3 for 17 effort from beyond the three-point arc, a 17.6 percent clip.
Both teams traded scoring possessions for the majority of the first five minutes of the ballgame, but from the 15:16 mark on, Cal State L.A. went on a 19-3 run over the next eight minutes to lead by 19 points at 28-9. The squads would begin to trade buckets for the remainder of the half, but the Golden Eagles held a 38-20 lead at the intermission.
Continuing its run at the end of the first period, CSULA scored the first 13 points of the half before a
Sydney Bennett jumper at the 14:32 mark ended a string of 17 unanswered points for the hosts which began late in the opening half. The Golden Eagles continued their hot hand and eventually led by as much as 42 points before a
Brittany Martin three-pointer with 26 seconds left in the contest determined the 78-39 final in favor of Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles were led by the 14 points of Alisha Belt and 12 points of Paige Melville. Cal State L.A. shot 45.2 percent as a team on 33 of 73 from the floor, including a fiery 54.3 percent in the second half (19-35). CSULA also led in rebounds (54-38), blocks (6-0), steals (14-6) and points in the paint (44-8).
Sonoma State will travel north to Arcata on Thursday at 5:30 pm to play Humboldt State in the the third game of a four-game roadtrip.
