DAVIS, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team suffered two more losses on Saturday, dropping a 14-6 decision to UC Davis before a 7-3 loss to CSU Bakersfield in the Aggie Shootout in Davis. With the losses, the Seawolves are 0-7 and still looking for their first win of the 2014 campaign.
Sonoma State opened the Aggie Shootout against the host team, UC Davis. A quiet first half from SSU helped UC Davis hold onto their first quarter lead and eventually win the game. The Seawolves had a better showing in the second half, but had already dug too deep of a hole to complete the comeback. The final score was 14-6 in favor of the Aggies.
Nicole Browning and
Brittny Hummel kept Sonoma State in it early, each scoring a goal in the first quarter. After a 4-2 opening quarter, the Aggies put up a shutout in the second quarter, extending their lead to 8-2 by halftime.
The third quarter didn't hurt the Seawolves, but didn't help either. Hummel netted her second goal of the game, and
Alexa May and
Carleigh Robinson also got into the scoring column with single goals of their own. But,
Kim Covert also allowed three goals to get by her, hindering the Seawolves chance at denting the Aggie lead.
Like the game, the fourth quarter was won by the Aggies. A 3-1 advantage in the fourth sealed the deal, and ended the game at 14-6. Nicole Herrera scored the lone goal for the Seawolves in the quarter.
The second and final game for the Seawolves on the day saw them faceoff against the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield. The offense was halted again in this one, seeing only three Seawolf goals enter the net. Defense was key in this game for both teams, but it was the Roadrunners who held on tighter, winning by the score of 7-3.
Sonoma State scored one goal in each of the first three quarters.
Jessica Stansfield scored both first half goals for the Seawolves to tie the score at 2-2 with 5:22 remaining in the half. CSUB put in the last two goals of the half after Stansfield's goal and pushed their lead to 4-2.
The Roadrunners then locked down the Seawolves offense, allowing only one second half goal. Robinson netted her second goal of the day with 3:57 remaining in the third, closing the gap to a two-point deficit at 5-3. That's the closest they would get as CSUB went on to win the game, 7-3.
Sonoma State heads home to play Long Beach State at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. First sprint is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
