GAME 2: Cal State San Bernardino 8, Sonoma State 0 (6 innings) -- Box Score
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- After
Megan Konieczka and
Amanda Rossetta each brought home a run in the top of the third inning of the series opener, the offense fell silent and, as a result, the Sonoma State softball team suffered two losses (3-2 in eight innings and 8-0 in six innings) at the hands of Cal State San Bernardino in Friday's doubleheader action in San Bernardino.
The Seawolves remain above .500 with a 7-5 overall record, but have lost five straight conference games, dropping to 1-5 in the CCAA. The Coyotes, meanwhile, improve to 9-6 (3-3 CCAA).
Konieczka continues her hot streak at the plate -- she went 4 for 6 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored to extend her hitting streak to a career-best eight games. As a team, the Seawolves combined for 15 hits in the twinbill, but left 16 runners on base.
After two scoreless innings in the opener, Sonoma State put the first runs up on the scoreboard to take a 2-0 lead. With one out,
Hayley Condon drew a walk, then two batters later, Konieczka laced a tripled into the right center field gap to score Condon. Two more batters later, Konieczka was brought home on a single to right field by Rossetta, but it would end up being the only runs on the day for SSU.
Cal State San Bernardino knotted things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning without the virtue of a base hit -- a walk and a huge error allowed two runs to score, both with two outs. It would take extra innings to decide a winner, but the Coyotes were the ones to pull it out in their half of the eighth inning on a walkoff single by Mary Menicucci.
Amanda Llerena (4-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (one earned), 10 hits and three walks, striking out three. Her counterpart, CSUSB's Stephanie Luhman (3-2), scattered seven SSU hits, allowing two runs and three walks while fanning three.
Konieczka and
Alison Strycula each had two hits in the contest for the Seawolves.
In the nightcap, it was all Cal State San Bernardino as the hosts scored two runs in the first, a run in both the second and third innings, then induced the eight-run mercy rule with four runs in the sixth to take the 8-0 win. The Seawolves totaled eight hits in the ballgame, but couldn't put a run across the plate.
Katy Bihl went 3 for 3 on offense, but gave up four runs in the pitching circle after taking over for starter
Melissa Smith (2-1) in the fifth inning. Konieczka added two more hits in game two.
Cassandra Williams (6-4) got the complete-game win for the Coyotes.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.
