Women's Water Polo Twice Comes Up Short At CLU Invitational

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 11, Sonoma State 9 (OT)
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Sonoma State 5

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. --
The Sonoma State women's water polo team started their first match of Saturday's Cal Lutheran Invitational against the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. This one took overtime to decide a winner after a 9-9 score at the end of regulation. The Athenas got the best of the Seawolves, out-dueling them in that overtime and winning 11-9.

This back-and-forth game featured five Seawolves getting into the scoring column, the first of them being Alexa May to even the score at 1-1 in the first quarter. Her goal would be the lone goal of the first quarter for the Seawolves, watching the Athenas take the early 3-1 lead.

SSU came alive in the second quarter, netting four goals. The Seawolves scored three in a row to take the 4-3 lead, two of those goals coming from Jessica Stansfield. Her goals were on the front and back end of Lexii Morabito's first goal of the game. Carleigh Robinson scored her first of the game as well as the Seawolves broke the first half tie and ended the half with the 5-4 lead.

May and Morabito both put in their second goals of the game in the third quarter. which ended in a deadlock at 7-7. But, with 12 seconds to go in regulation, Kim Covert allowed the game-tying goal to send this one to overtime tied at 9-9. The Athenas would be the only ones to net another goal in overtime, adding two and finishing off the Seawolves 11-9.

The Seawolves second game of the day was more of a defensive game against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer. Noelle Herrera busted open the game early with a goal at the 7:22 mark of the first quarter. The Seawolves would only net another four goals to finish the game, losing by the score of 7-5.

The Sagehens took control of this game after Herrera's first goal, ending the half on a 5-0 run and taking a 5-1 lead into the break. That hole the Seawolves put them in would turn out to be too much to overcome in the end. even after winning the second half 4-2, the Seawolves still came up just short of pulling off a comeback victory. Herrera and May added two more goals in the second half, but saw the game end with a two goal deficit, 7-5.

Sonoma State also competed in a match prior to this Invitational on Friday, Feb. 28. The Seawolves broke the season-long losing streak and entered the win column. They beat host school, the San Bernardino Coyotes by the score of 13-4.

After taking an 8-4 lead after three quarters, Covert took a break while Andrea Mallul got time in goalie. Mallul blanked the Coyotes and saw her team score five to put this game away. She even added an assist of her own to go along with two saves.

Morabito lead the team in scoring with four goals followed by Stansfield's three. Herrera and Caitlin Risden both had two while May and Robinson chipped in with one goal each.

After Friday's and Saturday's games the Seawolves go to 1-10 on the season. They finish the Cal Lutheran Invitational tomorrow against host school Cal Lutheran at 8 a.m. and against Chapman at 11:45 a.m.
