Robinson Leads Seawolves To Win Over Cal Lutheran On Sunday

Freshman Carleigh Robinson caged five goals against host Cal Lutheran on Sunday morning.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- On the final day of the Cal Lutheran Invitational, the Sonoma State women's water polo team faced off against the host school, the Cal Lutheran Regals, and took home its second win of the season with an 11-10 decision Sunday.  After falling behind 5-1 with 5:07 left in the first half, the Seawolves went full-throttle the rest of the game, closing it with an 11-10 victory.

That four-goal deficit of 5-1 was cut in half in the last five minutes of the first half. Caitlin Risden scored her only goal of the game while Carleigh Robinson put in her first of five goals to make the score 5-3 at halftime.

Two third quarter goals by both Robinson and Noelle Herrera, and one by Alexa May, helped the Seawolves take the 8-7 lead after three quarters of play. Nicole Browning netted her only goal of the game with 7:06 remaining, giving SSU the 9-7 lead. The Regals would fight back to tie the game, only to see Robinson fire in her last two goals of the game before time expired to give the Seawolves the 11-10 win.

Sonoma State's offense, though, was quieted in the second game of the day against the No. 4 ranked Chapman University Panthers. After an 11-goal performance versus the Regals, SSU lost to the Panthers by the score of 5-4.

Andrea Mallul got the start in goal in this one for the Seawolves, allowing only five goals on 18 attempts by the Panthers. May did her part scoring three of the four Seawolf goals, but saw no netted goals by her or her teammates in the fourth quarter.

May and Jessica Stansfield helped the Seawolves gain the early advantage this game, both scoring a goal for the 2-1 team lead after the first quarter. After a 2-2 split at halftime, May would add two more goals in the third quarter. But, the Panthers added three of their own, taking a 5-4 lead into the fourth quarter. Scoring for both teams would end right there, as the game finished with the Panthers on top, 5-4.

After the Cal Lutheran Invitational the Seawolves end up with a 2-11 record heading into next weekend's doubleheader in Hayward on Sunday, Feb. 9.  They face off against Cal State East Bay at 11:30 am followed by a game against Mercyhurst at 2:30 pm.
