Sonoma State 9, Cal State Monterey Bay 7
SEASIDE, Calif. -- After trailing by two goals through the first eight minutes of the contest, the Sonoma State water polo team outscored Cal State Monterey Bay 8-4 the rest of the way to grab a 9-7 victory on Friday at the Otter Tank in Seaside. The Seawolves snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 6-16 this season, including 3-2 against fellow WWPA opponents. The Otters fall to 8-12.
Sonoma State surrendered three goals in the opening period, scoring just one themselves, but Seawolf goalie
Andrea Mallul and the SSU defense settled down to keep host Cal State Monterey Bay in check for the remainder of the day. Meanwhile, Sonoma's offense threw in four goals in the second period to take a 5-4 lead into the intermission.
In the third period, CSUMB clawed back into the match and pulled even with SSU at 7-7, but the Seawolves pulled out all the stops in the final eight minutes, scoring two and shutting out the Otters to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Brittny Hummel caged three balls, adding two steals and one assist,
Shannon Baer tallied a couple of goals as well to lead Sonoma State's offense.
Carleigh Robinson,
Caitlin Risden,
Alexa May and
Noelle Herrera also scored a goal in Friday's road victory. Between the posts, Mallul made seven saves, allowing just four goals in the final 24 minutes.
Sonoma State will return home next weekend to play two games on Saturday (Apr. 5) -- one against UC San Diego at 10:00 am and the other against Cal State Monterey Bay at 4:00 pm -- before hosting the Michigan Wolverines at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool on Sunday at Noon.
