GAME 2: Sonoma State 6, #11 UC San Diego 1 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Ashley Long was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and a pair of RBI and
Megan Konieczka batted in two runs as well, helping the Sonoma State softball team to a 6-1 win in game two after suffering a narrow 3-1 loss to 11th-ranked UC San Diego in the series opener on Friday at the Seawolf Softball Field in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves move to 11-9 overall and 5-9 in the CCAA, while the Tritons are now 13-3 (8-2 CCAA).
The nationally-ranked UC San Diego squad got off to a fast start in the first game of the doubleheader, plating three runs in the top of the first inning off of SSU starter
Amanda Llerena, all of them unearned, however. The Seawolves should have been out of the inning before McKenna Clewett ripped a two-RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Emma Schneider, but an error earlier in the inning allowed it to continue.
From then on, Llerena settled down, allowing just five hits in her final six innings of work, leaving it up to her offense to rally. The rally wouldn't come until the bottom of the sixth inning when
Leanna Georges lined a one-out single up the middle to break up a no-hitter by UCSD starter Alexis Edwards. Georges later came around to score on a double by
Hayley Condon. The Seawolves threatened for more, loading the bases with one out, but Edwards induced two straight groundouts to escape the threat. It would prove to be the final offensive push for SSU, as Edwards closed out the game in the seventh to remain perfect on the year at 7-0. She allowed just three base hits by Sonoma, all of which came in the sixth inning.
Llerena (7-6) suffered the unfortunate loss despite not giving up an earned run in the contest. She struckout three in the process of lowering her ERA to 1.80, the second-best in the CCAA behind the 0.83 of Edwards.
In the nightcap, Sonoma State struck first on an RBI double by Long, scoring
Keisi Chinen. Again, the Seawolves were in position to tack on some extra runs, putting two runners in scoring position with one out, but UCSD's game two starter Alayna Brenman got out of the jam.
In the fifth, the Tritons knotted the game at 1-1 with an RBI double by Caitlin Brown, but that would prove to be the only mistake made by SSU's
Melissa Smith (3-2), who allowed just four UCSD hits in the contest during her complete-game effort.
The Seawolves' offense woke up in the bottom of the sixth after UC San Diego elected to take out Brenman in lieu of Jennifer Manuel. The decision led to five Sonoma State runs, thanks to four hits, a walk and two defensive errors in the frame to give SSU the 6-1 advantage. Smith took it from there, closing out the game in the top of the seventh to help Sonoma to a doubleheader split on Friday.
Long led the way with three hits, two of which were doubles. Chinen recorded three hits and Konieczka added a pair of hits and RBI's.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego will wrap up its four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader, starting at 11:00 am.
