TURLOCK, Calif. -- Behind more stellar pitching from George Asmus and Jon Richards, the Sonoma State baseball team continued its push towards the postseason with 6-1 and 7-1 wins at Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday.  The Seawolves, despite holding on to second place in the CCAA standings at 20-6 (23-12 overall), were not listed in the first official NCAA Division II West Regional rankings released Wednesday.  The Warriors fell to 12-30 and 6-27 in conference play.

The Seawolves escaped Stanislaus rallies in the opener to win 6-1 behind another gem by George Asmus. Then a six-run inning in the nightcap resulted in a 7-1 Sonoma State win and the twinbill sweep.

Sonoma State, now 23-12 overall and 20-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, will host Cal State Stanislaus in another doubleheader in Rohnert Park on Sunday to complete the four-game series.

Both starting pitchers were asked to go deep into the game and they both delievered for the most part. Nick Voumard was locked in in a pitching dual with Asmus in game one. Voumard went 6 1/3 innings and struckout eight batters — he fanned seven of the first 12 batters he faced before allowing a single in the fourth, which was just the second hit he gave up.

On the mound for the Seawolves was Asmus, who entered the game with a 5-0 mark and a 0.50 ERA. Asmus's ability to escape jams allowed him to improve to 6-0 on the year. Skippy Ferreria ledoff with a double and moved to third on a bunt, but was stranded there by Asmus. The Warriors worked the bases loaded in the fourth but a flyout ended that threat.

Cal State Stanislaus (12-30, 6-27 CCAA) did managed to finally get on the board to make it 2-1 in the eighth when Dayton Mellor doubled in Marcus Mastrobuoni who had tripled to right-center field to chase Asmus.

Sonoma State scored four runs in the ninth and Cody Lane threw a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to earn the four-out save. He had allowed the Mellor double, but Mellor was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple to end the inning.

In the nightcap, starter Jeremy McDonald got a 1-0 lead from his teammates when Cameron Irinaga singled in Ferreria. Mellor tried to score from second on the hit to left by Irinaga but was called out a home.

That momentum turned in favor of SSU in the second when the Seawolves scored six runs on five hits and two Stanislaus errors to blow the game open. McDonald did not allow an earned run in the inning.

Ferreria continues to hit well as he extends his current hitting streak to nine games going 1-for-4 in each contest. He has now hit safely in 30 of the last 32 games and all but six games — out of 42 — this season. Meanwhile, Colton Beatty's slump continued as he went 0-for-7 on the day. He's now hitless in his last 15 at-bats.

Mastrobuoni and Mellor each had four hits in the doubleheader — two hits in each game.
