BOX SCORE Sonoma State 4, #3 Cal State Monterey Bay 2 (14 innings) -- Box Score
STOCKTON, Calif. -- It took 14 innings, but the Sonoma State softball team pulled off a 4-2 upset victory over top-seed and third-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay to open the 2014 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Championship Tournament in Stockton on Friday. The Seawolves (36-17) advance to the winner's bracket and will play the winner of the other opening-round game between Humboldt State and UC San Diego on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
Both the Seawolves and Otters scored a run in the fourth inning, then again in the 10th inning before SSU struck for two runs in the top of the 14th inning. The CCAA Pitcher of the Year,
Amanda Llerena, outlasted the CCAA Player of the Year, Cori Reinhardt, as both pitched all 14 innings. Llerena allowed 15 hits, but just two runs and two walks, striking out five of the 60 batters she faced. On the other side, Reinhardt gave up nine hits and four runs (one earned), while walking three and striking out six of the 57 batters she faced.
Offensively for Sonoma State,
Ancia Purdy and
Keeley Ray had two hits each, one of Ray's hits went for a triple in the top of the 12th inning, but she was left stranded on third base.
Holli Brown had a double and and RBI while
Megan Konieczka also brought home a run in the contest.
Tied 2-2 in the top of the 14th inning,
Ashley Long led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Aubrie Tolliver. Ray then reached on a defensive error by CSUMB and Long moved to third before Ray stole second to put runners in scoring position with one out. After Reinhardt struckout Purdy for the second out,
Hayley Condon reached on a throwing error after a groundball to third base which allowed the eventual game-winning runs in Long and Ray to score.
Llerena took care of business from there to improve to 23-11 this season and push the Seawolves into the winner's bracket.
