Shannon Baer goal gave the Seawolves a 6-5 lead they wouldn't let go of in a 8-6 victory over Fresno Pacific on Friday at The Aquatics Center in San Jose. The win salvaged a day that started with a 15-5 loss to San Jose State. Sonoma State opens the new season with a 1-1 record.
#7 San Jose State 15, Sonoma State 5In the first match of the day, the first period proved too hard to overcome for Sonoma State as seventh-ranked San Jose State reeled-off the first seven goals, all coming in the first quarter, before
Alexa May hit the back of the net for the Seawolves to end the first quarter scoring. The second didn't go any better for the Seawolves as the Spartans got another two goals to make it 9-1. The third and fourth quarters of the match were closely contested as the Seawolves were able net four goals to the Spartans six to settle on a 15-5 final.
May added another goal in the second period to give her two for the match.
Carleigh Robinson,
Kaysie Lewis, and
Jessica Becker provided the other three goals.
Andrea Mallul had 13 saves for Sonoma State. San Jose State's Rae Lekness led all-scorers with five goals.
Sonoma State 8, Fresno Pacific 6Kennedy Fald and Lexli Morabito each had two goals to lead the way for the Seawolves in the 8-6 victory over Fresno Pacific. With the Seawolves behind 1-0,
Ellen Peterson put one in the net at 1:40 of the opening quarter to tie the match at one. The Seawolves fell behind again shortly after Peterson's goal, but
Brittny Hummel scored at 4:14 of the second quarter to tie it at 2 and the Seawolves would never trail again. The match was tied at 5, but the Seawolves came up clutch with three of the final four goals to secure their first win of the season.
The other goals for Sonoma State came from
Carleigh Robinson and the previously mentioned Baer goal to make it 6-5.
Mikayla Kloss and
Andrea Mallul split goal-keeping duties. Mallul had four saves, while Kloss had three saves.
Sonoma State returns to the water next Saturday in Santa Barbara at the UCSB Winter Invite with two matches. They will start against California Baptist University at 2:10 P.M. and finish the day with Azusa Pacific University at 6:10 P.M.
