QUEENS, N.Y. -- James Davis and
Brandon Tillis dropped in nine points apiece, and while it trailed by just seven points with 5:41 to play in the game, the Sonoma State men's basketball team couldn't get any closer in falling to NCAA Division I St. John's 64-46 on Saturday evening in Queens, N.Y.
Saturday's game serves as the only exhibition contest for the Seawolves before they open up the regular season on Friday at Dominican in San Rafael. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
Sonoma enjoyed its largest lead of the night when
Jimmy Golden hit a three-pointer with 11:52 to play in the first half to put the visitors up 13-9, capping off a 9-0 run by the Seawolves after trailing 9-4 at the 15-minute mark. The two teams would battle back and forth until the score was knotted at 20-20 when the Red Storm went on a 16-2 run to close out the half and take a 36-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
St. John's pushed its lead to as much as 16 points at 42-26 with 16 minutes to play in the game before Sonoma State chipped away, pulling to within seven points at 53-46 after a free throw by
Michael Avery with 5:41 to play, but the Red Storm flexed their muscle and finished the game on an 11-0 run to take the 64-46 win.
Davis and Tillis led the way with the aforementioned nine points, followed by seven points from both Golden and
Andy Mitchell. The Seawolves shot just 22.4 percent from the floor on 13 of 58 shot attempts, including a 3 for 25 effort (12.0 percent) from beyond the three-point arc.
St. John's was led by the 16 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocks from Yankuba Sima while Christian Jones had 13 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, the Red Storm hit on 36.2 percent of their shots (17-47) and outrebounded (44-35) and outblocked (11-1) the Seawolves en route to their 18-point win.
