STANFORD, Calif. -- Noelle Herrera scored three goals, but it would be the only offense for the Sonoma State women's water polo team as it lost 16-3 to defending national champion and No. 2-ranked Stanford at Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford Thursday night. The Seawolves fell to 2-11 this season while the Cardinal improved to 13-1.
Stanford pulled away early, scoring the first six goals of the contest before Herrera finally netted one with 5:16 left in the second quarter. She then scored another just two minutes later to cut Sonoma State's deficit to four goals at 6-2, but the Cardinal exploded for eight consecutive goals to put the match out of reach.
Herrera completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game at the four-minute mark of the fourth period, but Stanford threw in two more goals in the final two minutes to secure the 16-3 win.
Sonoma State will return to the pool next Friday and Saturday in Claremont, competing in the Convergence Tournament, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
