HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Sonoma State water polo team got scoring contributions from four different players, but it wouldn't be enough, as Cal State East Bay overcame an early deficit for a 6-4 win on Friday afternoon in Hayward. The loss leaves the Seawolves at 7-15 on the season while the Pioneers improve to 11-12.
Sonoma State's
Alexa May netted the first goal of the game to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead with 2:22 remaining in the first quarter. Sonoma would hold on to that lead for only a minute and a half as East Bay tied it at one with just inside a minute to go. Not even thirty seconds later, the Pioneers would score again to capture a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game.
The Seawolves kept it close the whole way, never trailing by more than two goals and drawing within one at 5-4 when
Brittny Hummel scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter. However, the game-tying goal remained elusive and the Pioneers tacked on a bit of insurance midway through the quarter to put the game away.
In addition to the goals by May and Hummel, Sonoma State also got scores from
Kaysie Lewis and
Noelle Herrera.
The Seawolves are back in action next weekend when they take on UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.
