IRVINE, Calif. -- Kaysie Lewis nearly outscored host Concordia herself, netting a career-high seven goals in a 17-7 victory for the Sonoma State women's water polo team on Sunday afternoon in Irvine. The Seawolves won four out of five matches this weekend to improve to 6-12 overall while the Eagles fell to 3-9.
Lewis scored four of her seven goals in the second half, including three in the fourth quarter alone to help put a cap on the win for SSU. She converted seven of her eight shot attempts in the contest, adding an assist and two steals.
Concordia took an early 1-0 lead on a goal in its first possession, but Sonoma rallied for seven unanswered goals to take a commanding 7-1 lead midway through the second period en route to the 17-7 victory.
Noelle Herrera also had a huge day on offense, chipping in with four goals and one assists, drawing a team-high four exclusions.
Megan McGrath added two goals while
Kennedy Fald,
Shannon Baer,
Alexa May and
Brittny Hummel each scored one goal as well. In the cage,
Andrea Mallul made seven saves in three quarters of action before giving way to
Mikayla Kloss, who made two saves in the fourth period.
The seven goals by Lewis was one shy of the program's single-game record for goals which is eight, it was set by former SSU water polo All-American Laurel Stricklin back on Feb. 21, 2010.
Sonoma State will play its first home match of the season on Saturday, kicking off a three-match home stand beginning with a match against WWPA-foe Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:00 pm.
