Seawolves Finish Fourth At WWPA Championships In Ohio

BOX SCORE:  Cal State Monterey Bay 6, Sonoma State 5
2015 WWPA Women's Championship Tournament Central

GENEVA, Ohio -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team came up short in the 2015 WWPA Women's Championship 3rd Place Game, 6-5, to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.  With the loss, the Seawolves see their season come to an end at 9-20 overall.

Alexa May and Andrea Mallul were named to the WWPA All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the pool this weekend as the Seawolves went 1-2, with a 14-5 win over Gannon on Friday before a pair of nailbiting one-goal losses to Cal State East Bay on Saturday and Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.

Sonoma State broke the scoreless tie two and a half minutes in with a powerplay goal by Alexa May, but it would be the only goal scored by SSU in the half.  Cal State Monterey Bay scored the equalizer on its first possession in the second quarter to even the game at 1-1 and that would be the extent of offense through the first 16 minutes of the contest.

In the second half, the Otters scored again to take a 2-1 lead before Brittny Hummel tied the score up at 2-2 with 6:47 to play in the third period.  From then on, the teams would trade goals until the 6:16 mark of the fourth quarter when the Otters tied the game at 5-5.  With 58 seconds to play, CSUMB's Adriana Craft stole the ball deep in SSU territory in transition and got her shot past Mallul for the go-ahead score.

The Otters regained possession shortly thereafter, but held the ball for a shot clock violation, leaving the Seawolves with 10 seconds on the clock to set up a play on offense.  The play called Hummel's name, but her attempt was stopped by Amanda Jennings and the clock expired to signal the 6-5 loss.

Sonoma State outshot Cal State Monterey Bay, 35-19, and was 2 for 2 on player advantages, but the Otters made the most of their opportunities and Jennings continued to excel in the cage for CSUMB, making 16 saves.  In fact, Jennings recorded 40 more saves than any other goalie this weekend in Ohio, making 70 stops.

Hummel and May both scored twice to lead the Seawolves on offense.  Mallul made five saves on the other end.

Sonoma State matched its win total from a year ago (9), and it is the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Seawolves have totaled nine wins.
