BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team jumped out to a 4-1 lead through the first quarter of play, but visiting Cal State East Bay scored 10 of the next 11 goals in the contest to defeat the host Seawolves, 11-7, on Friday afternoon at Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.
Noelle Herrera led Sonoma State (2-8) with three goals, including two in the first period.Â
Lily Carlon added a goal and two assists in the loss.
Scores from Herrera,
Lyndsie Williams and
Nicole Cunningham in the first five minutes put the Seawolves up 3-0 before Cal State East Bay's Sabrina Hatzer scored the first goal of what would be a career day for her. Herrera snuck one into the cage with 1:45 left in the opening quarter to put SSU up three at 4-1. That's when Hatzer went off scoring seven of the next 10 Pioneer goals, turning the visitors' 1-4 deficit into an 11-5 lead with 6:10 to go in regulation. Hatzer finished with a career-best eight goals for Cal State East Bay (4-6).
Kaysie Lewis punched one into the net with 3:42 to play before Herrera got her third goal of the game with a minute left, but that would be all the Seawolf offense could muster against CSUEB goalie Nikki Vaughan, who made 11 saves on the day. Her counterpart, SSU goalie
Taylor Plorin, made seven saves and two steals.
Sonoma State will return to action Sunday when it hosts Fresno Pacific at Rudloff Pool. First sprint is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
